Yesterday I tried to replace the fuel filter element on my Yanmar 50 HP diesel engine. I use Racor S3232UL filter element and it has a metal water bowl. I am assuming that I am supposed to reuse the water bowl on the new filter element. But the water bowl seems stuck hard to the element and I just could not remove it. I am wondering if it might be better to just replace the water bowl. Searching on the internet, I see some see-through water bowls like the one on the attached picture. So the questions are, 1) Is it ok to replace with a see-through water bowl? 2) What would be the appropriate part # for Racor S3232UL filter element? 3)How often do you check/ empty the water bowl?

Clear is great. Change it.

The metal bowls are Coast Guard required for commercial applications. And as such they cost a lot more. The see-through bowls for the average boater are the way to go. Then you can see at a glance if a problem is developing.

See thru bowl

I believe that the metal bowls are used when the filter is in the engine comparment. See thru (plastic, I think) apparently are not for use in the engine compartment due to heat. Michael

wrench for bowl

Chuck, Racor makes a plastic wrench for removing the water bowl. West Marine sells them for a few bucks. The o ring binds and makes it hard to remove even on a brand new unit.
