Maybe my earlier post wasn't clear. I believe I have water beneath the cabin area of the and the outer hull on my 1971 Catalina 22 swing keel. Has anyone else faced this problem and how did you deal with it. I asked Catalina corporate about it. They suggested that I "open" and area to gain access to the space, but recommended against drilling -- seems like an oxymoron to me. Anyone have ideas? I can't think of an existing "open" area to the space.

The bilge?

Do you mean there is water between the hull and the cabin floor? That space is called the bilge and is very tight on a C22. My 1986 C22 has a couple of teak access panels on the floor to get to the bilge. Any water that gets in there goes to the middle of the boat because the hull is curved. Doesn't your C22 have the access panels?

cabin water

Good day, I have a 1970 Catalina 22 #81 and have experienced many leaks. If you have a swing keel, and the pivot bolt goes through the hull in the keel trunk, there maybe a leak at that this point. This bolt is just below the locking pin for the keel. The fix for this kind of leak was to epoxy a shaving cream cap over the bolt and seal it well. This was the fix in 1970. I just plastered some epoxy over the entire bolt and nut. I have had no leaks for about 25 years. If I need to get the bolt out I will just grind the epoxy off. My boat almost sunk because of the through hull keel bolt. This was the reason that catalina went to the out side hanger for the keel. Also you may need to put some water proof grease on the locking pin as the pin is at the water line and water can work its way in through the bolt threads. I hope that this may help you. Fair winds AL

Not the bilge

On the Catalinas, the entire topside and cabin area is one integrated unit that is "dropped" onto the hull. I believe I have water between the "insert" and the hull -- not the bilge area.

Not the locking pin

No water problems from the pin. I beleve the water is between the cabin itself and the hull. I can't believe Catalina didn't design an access point somewhere in the cabin for that area. They confirmed to me that it is possible to have water in there...now the chore is confirming that it's there -- and if so -- getting it out! Thanks for your suggestion though.

Confused

I guess I'm confused. I know that the deck and cabin is a unit that is droppen on to the hull. But the floor of the cabin unit - at least mine - does dot actually lay right on the hull, there is a space between them - the bilge. That space exists everywhere below the cabin floor and all the spaces drain to the middle - right to the keel area. Mine is a fioxed keel so maybe the swing keels are different.

Not the bilge

The bilge is the area by the battery and the volcano. The area I am talking about is *beneath* that...between the hull and the bottom portion of the insert. That help?
