Water Ballest Concerns

With all the recent messages on this site lately concerning possible water ballast tank leaks I really became concerned when during the last 4 trips to my boat I was welcomed with about 1/2 inch of water on the cabin floor. I sponged it up and drained it down the sink. I was really concerned that I might also have a leak in the water ballast tank. In much of the midwest we have been inundated with severe storms one after the other for over a month now. Squall lines have been moving through one after the other. Usually after a heavy rain I would get a little water on the cabin floor and pick it up with a paper towel or two. This water lately was brackish as well as others have noted concerning water on the cabin floor. Yesterday was the first day I was able to take a close look after a few days of relief from the rains. I had mopped up the water the day before. What I found yesterday was a dry floor, but the backs of all my cushions (port and staroard) were thoroughly soaked. I guess the heavy rains 5-10 inches in a couple of hours coupled with the 60-80 MPH winds was too much for the h26. I'm not sure where the water came in from but window leaks are minor compared to a ballast tank problem. I decided the brackish color was from the water laying on the cabin sole and absorbing some of the stain out of it. Checking all the visible low areas showed no signs of water elsewhere. I'm still drying out cushions. So, although I have a leak in my cabin which I need to find and fix, I'm relieved to know I don't have major repairs to my ballast tank. My problem may be one that others may consider if they see water below in their cabin.

Had Leaks Too!

Gus, I used to find water all the time on the floor. Think you are correct about the stain or oil coloring the water. On our 1996 H26 we had a cover made for the cabin roof and hatch boards. We used the same sunbrella material as on the main sail cover. This cover snaps in place using the same snaps needed for the camper top. This cured 95 percent of our leaks. The water behind the cushions could be hard to find. "Festivity" H26

water from above

Dear Gus; The water behind your cushions is more than likely from your roof leak (around the sea hood hatch) as previously mentioned you need to have a canvas cover made to completely cover the whole hatch / pin-board system. The water behind the cushions more than likely comes from the same place. The other possibility is the acrylic port windows have been over tightened on the screw latches, which have cracked and now do not make a tight seal around the opening, this happened to me and after replacing the window we've had no more leaks in the cooler area and under the galley sink...

Hatch leak

The leak is in the sliding hatch. You have to take the slider out of the cover. There is a teak wood strip on the top side. Unscrew it then clean it up and re seal it with good silicone from the hard ware store. It fixed my leak. The blue cover is good. But the reseal is better

Short Teak Wood Strip

Hunter produced H26's with the top teak wood strip on backside of the sliding hatch to short. When the boat pitches at port during a rainstorm the water runs in at either side into the cabin. I purchased my boat new and it had this defect. I got a new board from hunter with the correct length. I have seem many H26's with a cover over the hatch. It is not needed if fixed properly.
