Water ballast
I have a H240 with the water ballast. From every thing I hear, the water ballasted boat heels a little more or more rapidly than non water. The physics would indicate more of a lever arm for the weighted keel which would make the boat harder to tip.I find the water ballast fun and safe as the boat will not actually tip over. We sail on lake michigan in 25 to 30 mph winds (I avoid the 30 mph when possible). On lake M. when the wind is out of the N. very large bulldozing waves are created at 15 mph winds. Even with high wind and large wave (6 ft) the boat handles well. (with or without reefing the main.)The boat is very stable and just as fast when we reef the main (usually at 15mph wind.)The advantage of the water ballast is that I leave it on the ramp and can tow the 1300 lb lighter load with my 6 cyl.
