What is the best product to use to clean out the bacteria and smells coming from the water ballast in the MacGregor?

When I had a 26S I would break up and funnel in a pool chlorine tab a couple times a year. Kept the ballast tank clean.

Chlorine. Tabs work. I bought a bottle of chlorine crystals at Home Depot. Bottle lasts forever. I will pass it on to the person that buys my Mac along with other various and sundry items I have collected for her.

Just last weekend, I purchased a water ballast boat and I've been wondering about the holding tank. Not so much about killing the algae but worrying about carrying invasives to other water. Is there a recommendation of how to SAFELY ensure your ballast tank is free of things like zebra mussels etc. I like to try out new places but I also don't want to be part of the problem.

Rob,

Wouldn't keeping the valve closed while the tank is full (something you should do anyway) keep all bad things out? And wouldn't emptying the tank when on the trailer (something you should do anyway) let everything out?

Draining the tank is a must but it takes a while for it to be completely dry inside and the vile little vermin are pretty tough.
