water-ballast tank valve

I recently purchased a hunter 26. I found it difficult to turn the wing nut to close the water-ballast valve after letting it fill up. I don't know if this is normal due to the fact that I'm actually pulling up the valve to shut the opening of the tank, and therefore have to work against the weight of the water. It seems to work fine when dry. Should I just plan on using a pair of pliers every time, or is there some repair I need to make?

WING NUT?

What year is your boat? My 2001 has a 6-8" flat stainless steel bar with the 1/2" nut welded to the center. This set up gives plenty of leverage and allows two handed closing. Call hunter I'm sure it is available.

Anti-Seize

Coat the threads with an anti-seize lube ask the guy at the auto parts store. Stainless will gall very easy and make it difficult to turn the threads. Also a good idea on the forestay turnbuckle if you trailer and turn that one often.

H26 Water Ballast Valve

It is not normal for it to be difficult to close, There is a simple threaded bolt that extends down to the "dinner Plate" valve. Clean up the threads or replace as mentioned by others.

On my 1995 hunter 26 there is a ring installed at the end of the threaded rod. I just put my finger through the ring with one hand and pull up and tighten the wing nut with the other. I also leave the bung plug out until the wing nut is tight, it seems to let off a bit of pressure.

My 1994 Hunter 26 also has a ring at the top of the threaded rod. I am able to put my finger through it and pull it up fine to tighten the wing nut when dry on the trailer. From your response as well as others posted here, I'm deducing that my threaded rod must be catching or jamming on something as I try to pull it up when the tank is full. I'll fiddle with it again next time I launch the boat, and if I still can't get it to operate smoothly, I'll look into replacing that part. Thanks to all of you for your valuable input.
