I have a Hunter 23.5 with water ballast. When I leave the boat docked for a period of time the water in the ballast tank has an odor! Would it harm anything to place a small amount of bleach into the ballast tank?

Stinky Water

After two months of not draining the water from my 260, because I use a lift, when I finally drained the ballast water, the Park Service people were looking for a EPA Superfund site. I put a cup of bleach in the tank vent hole after I refilled the tank. So far it seems to work. Time will tell which is stronger. Good Luck.

I have added bleach in the past, however you must continue treatment on a regular schedule.adding at least every month. I had the same issue, having not changed the water in 30 months or added additional bleach. When I pulled the boat and drained the tank it smelt like I was dumping raw sewerage. got a few nasty looks from others around the ramp. Others have recommended water bed treatment, claiming longer active control and even filling with fresh water from dock to reduce bacteria and groth ect. while still adding treatment. All seem logical. Bleach is the least expensive option and I keep a jug on board anyway for cleaning. good sailing
