Water ballast leak?

We have repaired the last 2 seasons two cracks that spread out in a "Y" about 2 inches from the centerboard well on our '94 Hunter 26 (one of the early productions - Hull #17) . When we moved the boat from winter storage this weekend to prepare for summer sailing, water began dripping from one of these cracks. I'm assuming that this "crack" has now expanded into the water ballast and this was some remaining water from last season. Has this been a problem with other Hunters ... cracks around the centerboard well. I'm assuming due to the boat's design, it is subject to stress in this area. We have been very diligent in not quickly dropping the centerboard once we saw the first crack. But another appeared last season. What other damage might be going on due to these cracks? And what can be done to repair it? How serious is the problem? Is it okay to sail like this until repair can be made?

Don't do this at home, only trained professionals!

The marina two years in a row placed the boat via a lift on a trailer for winter storage with the tank full. No leaks inside or out and when I opened the vent inside water welled out (yuk). alan

Tank full?

Surely you are not suggesting that the yacht was lifted clean out of the water with the tank full. That sure is a way to bugger your yacht!

You bet Mark!

I noticed the trailer was sitting much lower than it usually was, opened the vent and the water came welling out. Heck of a way to test the hull and tank, but obviously no leaks. And mark, around these parts the h 26 is NOT considered a yacht. Just a small (but fun) boat :) alan

Little boat

Well I guess they are hey I enjoy sailing on the 260 as much as I do on our larger yachts and besides for most people its a great way to get into sailing on a fine craft without having to mortage the home.

Hull strength

I've had this discussion with Hunter before. The bottom of the Hull within the waterbalast area in particular, is a little on the fragile side. I've seen a number of cracks in the area within the water ballast tank on H 260's and recomended Hunter beef this area up. Jeff Peltier
