Water Ballast Help Needed

Subject: Water Ballast - Hunter 240 CAN ANYBODY HELP PLEASE? On purchasing Hunter 240 I found the stop cock was siezed in 'ON' position allowing tank to fill. However, when underway water came out thus making hull very unstable by surging, because of partially filled ballast tank. I was able to apply heat to large wing nut on top of stop cock and release same. Now I launch the boat with stop cock open, let the boat settle for 20 minutes, shut stop cock and find there is only 6 inches of water in the tank. (checked through hole next to stop cock. Naturally the boat is unstable and can not be sailed. How much water should be recorded by dipping this hole when full? Any suggestions as to the cause and remedy of this problem would be appreciated.

Push down on the seacock holding it open . . .

untill the ballast tank fills. Sometimes the water rushing in will cause the sea cock to close prematurely. You may need to back off the wing nut and push the rod downward to assure the tank is filled up to about four to six inches from the top of the vent opening. When full, close the seacock before getting underway.

Humm....

In our 240 the level in the tank was about 3"- 4" below the vent opening when full, as I recall. Never did "dip" the tank though, so can't answer that question. Twenty minutes to fill seems excessive to me maybe ten minutes max. I'd make sure that the plate covering the tank opening and its gasket are OK, maybe a new gasket? Good luck Narelle

You probably are releasing the vent, but I must ask anyway. Did you release the vent plug while filling? Without the vent plug open, you cant get much water in the balast tank. (20 min is too long to fill) 5 or 10 min seems more realistic

Water ballasting steps

Filling your water-ballasted H240: 1st - Suggest you keep the valve closed until the boat is launched. The gasketed valve plate on the bottom extends below the surface of the hull in the open position. Potenially it could catch on something during launching, causing serious damage. 2nd - In open water, remove the vent plug; turn the wing nut counter-clockwise fully (until it hits the stop nut near the top of the threaded shaft); push down the wing nut and shaft and hold it down while ballast tank is filling (you'll feel and hear the air escaping from the tank through the vent hole). 3rd - When tank is filled (air will cease escaping through the vent) in three to four minutes maximum, turn wing nut clock-wise until it stops against the base washer. 4th - Replace vent plug. Other tips and information: 1. Make sure the threaded shaft is not turning when you turn the wingnut. There is a pin on the valve plate (which is attached to the shaft that runs up through the tank and on which the wing nut turns) which is designed to keep the plate and shaft from turning. If that pin has been sheared, the shaft could turn and not move the full extent intended up and down. 2. Keep the valve closed until the boat is on the trailer during retrieval from the water, then open the valve just before pulling the boat up the ramp. 3. If you are keep the boat in the water for more than a day or two, I'd suggest adding a gallon of bleach (like Clorox) to the ballast tank, pouring it through the vent hole with use of a small funnel. 4. Water in the ballast tank should be within about six inches of the vent hole. Hope all this helps. Dale Wile, Sandpoint, Idaho

Water tank valve

The wing nut is on a long threaded rod with a circular plate welded at the other end seen from the bottom of the boat. There is a gasket that is glued on to the plate to keep water from seeping out when heeling. In addition, there is a pin also welded to the plate that goes upward to keep the plate from spinning when loosening or tightening the wing nut. When you loosen the wingnut and if the threaded rod does not drop down, then use your foot to push it down. Suggest that you always leave the valve open except for when it is in the water. Do not heat up the wing nut as it will do nothing. One other suggestion is to look if anyone put any sealing in the wrong place. Crazy Dave
