1/4 inch or 3/8 should do...

Also, there is a small gasket on the top where you screw down the valve, and that needs to be replaced periodically, too. To make your own, get something somewhat pliable, like neoprene (wetsuite material) would work well. Fair winds, Tom

Water Ballast Seal ( Photo )
Here is a photo of a Hunter factory replacement "Water Ballast Control" including the round stainless stopper with the gasket and threaded rod attached. I was sailing along and the boat began to feel quite tender in 10-12 mph wind. I went below to see if the ballast tank was full and found the wing nut and threaded rod came right out in my hand when I went to tighten it. Seems that the weld where the threaded rod and the round bottom plate connect must have broken and the plate fell to the bottom of the ocean. I put the boat on the trailer a bit off center with the centerboard resting on the port side bunkboard and cut the starboard side board to install the Ballast rod as doing so "in the water" would be near impossible(even as an experienced diver) The threaded rod had to be cut to fit at the top to clear the hinged step and the hole re-drilled for the clevis pin that holds the wing-nut.

This is a close up of the replacement Water Ballast Control gasket material supplied by Hunter 07/2004. It is about 3/8 inch thick and looks like the same synthetic material used to cushion household carpeting. I glued it to the stopper plate using an even, thin coat of West System 2 part epoxy. Too much West sealer would wick into it and make it brittle...just a dab will do it.
