Water accumulator tank

I am thinking about installing a Jabsco 2 gallon water accumulator tank on my 1992 H 35.5. I am tired of the constant pump cycling and have heard this conserves battery power and extends pump life.
My motivation is more to get rid of the constant cyling which I find anoying.
Has anyone done this and is the 2 gallon tank sufficient?
Thanks for your input.

For lack of a more knowledgeable response, it sounds way too large. We have a 24 oz. tank which is sufficient for our 4 gpm pump. I'd hate to lose the space for storage to a monster like the one you suggest.

I have the two gallon tank in my 44DS. I added it after my variable speed pump failed and I couldn't find anyone to say anything good about them. I replaced the pump with a single speed 3.4GPM pump from West Marine and then added the tank. I can run water for a significant length of time before the pump even needs to cycle.

I now carry a spare pump as well.

If you get a Jabsco Sensor Max VSD pump you will not need an accumulator.

The first thing to do is to be sure that you don't have any leaks. Sometimes you will NOT see water, but it is getting air in the system. The next thing may be that you need to rebuild your pump. Once they start leaking internally they will cycle more too. The accumulator will slow down the cycling, but does not stop it.

PS: Camping World has great prices on these units.

Bought a 2 gallon at Lowes years ago. Works great, would recommend getting at least a 2 gallon one. You can hide it anywhere. After it is set up, it is just another tank.

I'm with Steve, the Sensor Max VSD works very well and is quiet also. I have better water pressure on the boat than I do at home.

I may have to consider getting rid of my Flo-Jet water pump and replacing it with the Sensor if it's that good.

You coming down the river and racing in BayJam this weekend?

Hey Dan,

I can't make it down to the boat this weekend. What's Bayjam? Is it something I don't want to miss?

Water pump

Hi Don, does the pump cycle when there is no water draw from any faucet? If so you likely have a leak someplace. When we purchased our boat in 2002 the pump would do its usual burp cycle about every two minutes. At first I thought, as did the PO, that it was a pump problem because he had replaced the pressure sensor.

After considerable trouble shooting I found the leak at a loose aft head shower fitting, a slow drip just enough to cause the pump to cycle. The only way to get access to this fitting was to remove the two 8D batteries, a major PITA. About a year or two later the batteries needed replacing, so while that spot was open I tightened the fitting.

Ever since then the pump will only cycle when there is a draw. It will remain on for hours and no burp. That leak left a stain indicating that it had been there for quite some time. If your symptom is similar perhaps stopping the leak will save you some money.

BayJam is the Georgetown Racing Fleet Invitational race around the government marks between Grove Point and Still Pond, followed by a great party up in Turner's Creek off the Sassafras (used to be the old Epilepsy Cup series). It's one of the fun races to do (if there's wind!). Coming up this fall is the HdG Invitational with another great party at Tidewater.

I had a similar problem earlier this year. Evidently the water tank selector valve (two tanks-one pump) was leaking down the pressure. Taking it out of the water flow (I use only one tank anyway) cured that problem.

Same problem two years ago was solved by replacing the pressure switch.

Yes, finding stain marks and tightening water line fittings was the first course of remedial action taken. Then the head scratching began until the above two solutions were found to work.

1. Forget BayJam--poorly attended and run race, lousy party this year, eaten up by mosquitos in Turner Creek overnight.

2. What model number Sensor pump do you have installed--there are several selections in ever-increasing prices?

Hey Dan...

Sorry to hear about the race. I was down in Annapolis hanging out for the weekend - no bugs and excellent food!
I'll have to look at the pump this weekend and get back to you with the model number. I thought I had a picture of it somewhere on my computer but I couldn't find it.

Hey Dan!!!!

I was able to check the pump this weekend. It's a sensor max 14. I think it's rated at just under 4 gallons per minute. I't doesn't seem to have a problem running two sinks and a shower simultaneously (both hot and cold at the same time).

Thanks for getting that model number. It will make the decision process much easier now that I know what works...
