Water Accumulator on the 30

Okay, so I have this 1988 Catalina and when I turn on my pressure water system, I note that the pump will deactivate when the prsssure is up, but I also noted that Catalina never installed a water accumulator tank in-line to maintain pressure, pump cycling, hold more water, and reduce wear on the pump. The big issue is, which is best (accumulator tank) for the Cat 30 system and the best place to install it. I would think that a small precharged unit somewhere in the general FW pump area behind the galley would suffice. Has anyone added an accumulator to their FW system, and if so can you remark on the capacity and type installed in addition to the location? Thanks Bob

Ck out West Marine catalog where the water pumps are. I recall seeing a small acc. tank in there for about $35. It should do the trick.

Built In

Bob I believe Shurflo is now making a water pump with a built in accumulator. Earlier models were very large, but the newer ones are small and may match the footprint of the existing pump that you have. If your pump is old and you're considering replacement, you may want to try one of the combo units. Stu

Don't Need One

If your pump is old, replace it with one of the new variable speed fresh water pumps made by either Jabsco or Shurflo. Much quieter than any pump and no rapid cycling on & off & no need for an accumulator tank.
