I HAVE A 1977, 27 FOOT CATALINA WHICH HAS ACCUMULATED WATER BENEATH THE FLOOR,FORWARD OF THE BILGE, AND UNDER THE MAST POST. THIS CONDITION WAS DISCOVERED WHILE THE BOAT WAS IN STORAGE ON STANDS; SO I KNOW ITS NOT FROM AN OPEN SEAM. MY PRIMARY CONCERN IS HOW TO DRAIN THIS BEFORE IT STARTS TO ROT THE MAST SUPPORT, AND FIND WHERE ITS COMING FROM. IS IT SAFE TO DRILL A SMALL DIA. 2 OR 3 INCHES IN THE FLOOR AT THIS POINT TO PUMP IT OUT? ANY THOUGHTS OR GUIDLINES ON WHAT TO DO WOULD BE APPRECIATED. BARNEY

While I don't have a direct answer for you I also have the same design on my 1983 Catalina 30TR. I have poked an ice pick into the wooden block under the compression post and it feels solid. I have the shower sump hose which runs through and have given thoughts to replacing the block next winter just to be safe. There is mention of replacement and material options in the archives which might be of assistance. How do you know there is water as in my case I can't get to the forward side. I wish I could be more help and will follow your question to see if anyone else can help you more than I have. Have you asked Coneys?

Hi, I think that one important issue is to try to find the source of the leak. On my smaller boat, I found that the upper shroud chainplates were leaking water into the boat by going around and spilling water on the deck at any possibilities. If someone is inside and checks for water intrusion at this time, it would be easiest and quickest. There are plenty of ways to dry out the boat including a wet ot dry vacuum, a pump, chemical dryers and fans w/heaters but keeping it dry is going to be the point.
