Headwinds?
Pilot client of mine told me that if he was ferrying the plane to Hawaii from the Mainland, they fill the passenger and storage areas with rubber bladders filled with fuel.
On a flight that long from the Mainland, my client suggested that headwinds stronger than expected over a period of time could have changed the calculus on the amount of fuel needed. And he may just not have had enough fuel to compensate for the headwinds.
Pretty slick the way the parachute worked. Suppose the plane was a total loss?
