I am a new boat owner and current live aboard. I am about ready to change out my waste tank and was hoping that some hunter owner might have some advice for me. I am a 6'3" man and as you know the holding area is very small. Due to not being able to fit in the area I plan on cutting a hole in the aft cabin and working the issue from there. Any advice would be welcome and appreciated. Secondly, I have noticed lately that my built in freg in not cooling as it once was. Can anyone make any suggestions? I'm not sure if I can add freon or not. Again I am a new boat owner. Thanks Captians-

I think Freon....
can only be purchased and added by licensed refrigirator person. Has to do with that ozon.. Long gone are the days you can go to the store and buy freon...unless you are in a third world country like Mexico. This is all assuming that your refrigirator uses freon. abe

Replacing Hunter 35.5 Holding Tanks
Larry, if you will go into the Hunter forum and check under 35.5's you will find a write up plus pictures on how to change out the holding tank. If you can't find it, email me and I will walk you through it. Replaced the old aluminium holding tank wth a larger plastic one. Jim

Need the correct coolant too.
Larry: You need to be sure that you have the correct coolant too. There is a lot more to it than just charging the system. You need gauges and then there is oil etc. Hire a licensed pro and you may save yourself a lot of time and money. If you are using the old freon, consider switching to one of the newer more economical products. Your refrigeration guy can advise you on this too. If you 35.5 is like the 35 then there is plenty of room just aft of the head in that locker. You want the tank as close as possible to the toilet otherwise you will be pumping you waste for a long distance. The 35 had the pump out fitting on the starboard side adjacent to the lazarette where the tank should reside.

Larry - I'm almost never one to send a new visitor off to "search the archives", but this is one case where that's the best advice I can give. I've done the replacement that you are looking at, as have a number of 35.5 owners here - Alan, Honeyman, Jim Rushing, and others. Going through the rear wall of the aft cabin is the way to go. Set your circular saw blade to the right depth (drill a pilot hole if necessary) and go shallow so as not to hit anything on the other side. I ended up framing the section I cut out and replaced it when I was done. Better to cut once a little too big then to have to cut twice too small. There are several tank options that have been noted in the archives, all from Ronco Plastics - B171, B189, B250. Think about upgrading the vent line to a larger diameter while you're in there doing the work.
