I've just purchased a 79 H30 in need of some work. I'll be here often and thanks for all the help. I've called the service dept. at raritan and they are sending me a CR1 retro kit, joker valve and a few other servicable items to make the existing crown DD head function. The bladder was removed long ago and I need to install holding tank, vent lines, and hoses. It looks like the port vberth compartment will be the best place for a holding tank. Has anyone put one there before, Do you have a tank make and model # that fits, and where is the best location for a vent ? Thanks, Kevin

Our holding tank

Kevin, We had a 14.5 gallon holding tank and entirely new septic system installed last year on our 1978. The tank is in the V locker (they had to cut the hole bigger) and the vent is directly over the head. Where are you located in NY?

You'll find almost all the answers you need--

--best source for a tank, best place to put the tank, where to run to vent, how to install it, and more--in The Head Mistress forum Reference Library (go to the HM forum, click on the link to the library).

Holding Tank

A few years back, we had to (re) install an entire holding tank system in our 1980 Hunter 30. We put a 15 gal. flexible tank in the port v-berth locker as you suggested. Our head drains electrically using a macerator pump between the head and the tank - very convenient!. Pump-out hose and vent are run back, behind the interior liner, through the small storage compartment to the deck and hull respectively. That way, you can get under or behind them for installation. We also have a Y-valve for overboard discharge when permitted. Be careful of the lengths of all hoses. Before you know it, you can have the equivalent of 1 -2 gallons of waste sitting in the hoses on the way to the hoilding tank.

As I suggested?

The bladder tank was definitely your own idea. As for the v-berth tank location, that's only if the hose run from the toilet to the tank is less than 10'...which means if the toilet can't be at the aft end of the cabin, the v-berth is a bad choice of locations because there's virtually no way to prevent waste sitting in the head discharge hose to permeate it.

The head is directly behind the port v-berth, and the water tank is directly behind the head in the settee.

V-berth is excellent location for you, Pete

Read a few articles in the HM forum reference library (just click on the link to it on the forum homepage) for information about venting and fittings locations and sizes...and order the tank from Ronco Plastics.
