Waste Basket

Stray Cat, aka hull no. 82 is on a 3 week cruise on Lake Michigan right now. I already knew the waste basket was too small but there's nothing like a cruise to prove it.

As soon as I get home I'm going to make a very simple fix. The support that the waste basket sits on in the lazarette is just held on the bulkhead with some wood screws and I see no reason why the support can't be lowered by several inches to accommodate a larger waste basket.

I'm also NO fan of the bungee cord arrange used to secure the waste basket. I'm either going to use some Velcro strips on the bottom of the new waste basket, or buy another waste basket slightly larger than my new one and cut it down to about 8 or 10 inches tall. Screw it to the platform and the new wastebaset will just nest in the cut off wastebasket.

No more down on my knees hanging over into the lazarette and wrestling the wastebasket back into the bungee!

I felt the same way about that cheap bungee cord for the waste basket so I made a U-shaped bracket out of some PVC I had around the house and screwed that to the bulkhead just below the bungee so that the basket will slip in and out without a problem. The bungee is history. One of these days when I feel like removing everything from the locker and going down inside I will go with a larger basket. Hope you are having a good vacation. Wastebasket improvement completed! I need to get a life, right?

Okay, but it's great to be throwing trash through the little spring-loaded door in the galley, and not have to reach through to compact the trash that's already there after only a day.

I went with a wastebasket that's rated at 10 gallons and uses a 13 gallon bag. Attached it to the support with Velcro. I've done some dramatic heeling since installing, and it hasn't tipped over.

Emptying the trash is a cinch...hold up the hatch with left hand and grab basket with right:dance:
