Hey. I'm a new boat owner and I wanted to ask for a little advice. Had to leave my boat a few weeks, came back and found a wasp nest built in my sail cover. I considered using basic wasp poison through an opening in the cover to kill them but I'm worried about what would happen to the sail. Also, can't stay around too close if they get mad as I'm allergic to wasp stings. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :)

I'd hit it with the wasp spray, then hose things down.

Or just hit it with the hose and get outta there for 15 minutes, as long as you're not putting anyone at risk. But I'm a bit of an adrenaline junkie.

You could call a professional if neither of those sound appealing.

I have used raid wasp spray for years with no issues on the sail or other canvas. I do rinse it after they have abandoned their project. If you are worried about kids/pets/drunks etc. there are several eco-friendly sprays that are peppermint oil based that I have found work well as a repellent (just don't spray on the deck or it will become really slick.)

flood the area with soapy water. wont kill you when you breathe in , as will poison. they do not like soapy water, they are there fro the water...make it foul, and they leave. have fun.

soapy water also will not leave oily, greasy residue on your sail, as will raid, etc sprays....nor kill your cat or dog, when it investigates the situation..........

Home Depot

Go to Home Depot and get traps long greenish yellow tube that you add this liquid bait and they will work great and pricey not cheap but work way better than other cheaper ones and just hang on boom.
I went away for month and came back to a army of wasps and no matter what I did with hose they would hide in mast and return and we could not stay on the boat but after a day or 2 these traps filled with them and they were all gone.
I tried the cheap ones but not very good.

If you really are allergic than don't mess with them.

Normally I'd go with that except my boat acts as my apartment so kinda hard to ignore all the time when they get an attitude during the heat and start buzzing around:).

I'm sorry. I mean get someone else to. Don't take the risk yourself. You must carry an EpiPen, right?

About a year ago I had a nest of yellow jackets in the ceiling of my porch, and an old timer told me to wait to about dusk and take my shop vac and stick hose up to their enterance turn it on, then rap the ceiling with a broom handle. You can hear them being sucked in, after you quit hear any more leave it run and spray a good dose of wasp spray into the hose, then stuff a rag or paper towel in the end of the hose for a day or so before emptying.

Far,

I occasionally get mud wasps in my boat thru the companionway slat vents. I don't know what type you have, but the wasp spray kills them almost immediately.

I also don't know what access you have with which to spray, but if under the cover, here's is what I would do.

First wait until dark, wasps stay in their nest after dark. I would gently & with stealth-like moves undo the clips on your cover. Now, spray from the bottom up while moving front & back quickly. Use your other hand to pull the bottom open for more spraying room. I never saw a nest sprayed & wasps go looking to hunt & sting you after spraying. The wasps now have bigger problems. Spray and vacate quickly. Also wear your hooded foul weather gear zipped all the way with hood pulled down tight & gloves.

It should be an easy job pal. Experts say waiting after dark you can get them all.

I once say my grandfather casually reach up and crush a wasp nest with his hand with the little buggers still on the nest. He was so quick about it, he didn't even get stung. Of course he was one of the WWII generation. They aren't called the greatest generation for nothing. It is 35 years latter and I'm still in awe.

Personally I like a can of WD40 with the red stick attached and a bic lighter but that would not work on a boat.

A cold morning, and a garden sprayer with soapy water.

And your epi-pen, just in case.

Preventive Maintenance: Try putting dryer sheets (like Downy) in the sail and see if that help. We have had good luck with them.

When I forget to put them in there I also end up with Wasp Spray.

Steve,

If he already has a wasp nest, do you think he can (1) get close enough to use Downey before he gets stung?............really man?

Secondly, did you really picture what his problem was based on his orig. question in this thread?

Thirdly, obviously not knowing the size of his problem, do you really think a fabric softener is the cure???

I have to question your logic in this.

I had the same thing on my boat, I went into the cabin, took a broom and beat the heck out of the nest, then closed the sliding hatch, and waited. It worked, seems they all fly up, not down into the cabin. By the way, what Flo. are you in? S.C. or Italy?
