What to do?!! I checked the internet and found the debate over using a large, commercial machine vs. handwashing sails to be inconclusive. Anyone have a preference? Disaster story? Advice?

I assume this is a DIY job....

I have used a local laundry to do my old Morgan sails. They had a 50# washer and did each 25# sail separately. It was OK, they were clean, but general opinion is that a washing machine is too harsh on the sail cloth and will tend to break fibers. I have no idea if that is true or just hype from the sail cleaning companies. However, what I did two years ago is to borrow my buddies hot tub at the end of the season and wash my sails in it. I didn't use any soap, I just wanted to get all the sail out. They came out pretty clean, and my sailmaker saw them after thsi cleaning and he said that they looked good. If it was my hot tub, I would do it again and add some mild detergent. Hung them up to dry over a fence and bushes. Rich

Lawn washing.

I wait for a hot, dry day which is hard to come by in the early Spring. I mow a section of lawn with the catcher. Lay out the sail and scrub with one of those soft brushes on a pole. Rinse good and do the other side. The sail will dry nice and white. And I have never had grass stains even though I am walking on the sail(in my bare feet).

hand washing is best

The first year I laid the sails out and washed them with a regular detergent and washed them down with a hose. The following year I made the MISTAKE of having them professionally done. Not only was the price outrageous but they are falling apart. Granted out sail was not new but the difference in a year made us vow never to have them professionally done. This winter we will be purchasing a new main.

Sail Care

I used to go through this trouble every year trying new methods, and last year I sent My Sails to Sail Care, and was it worth it.

I used my pickup

I lined the bed of my truck with heavy plastic and put in enough water and mild soap to cover the sails. Let them soak overnight, then I scrubed them with a soft car wash brush. Worked great!
