i have a ds3..recently bought a main and jib off a guy who had a ds 1..pretty sure the jib is correct size cause we measured it..anybody know if the mainsail would be the same dimensions on a ds3 as a ds1..and what can i use to scrub down the saills...there's a label on the sail that says "o'day..made in china" and the mainsail has a number sewn into the sail..the stains on the sail look like cocoa..and they're not real dark..any suggestions from the group would be appreciated..you can e mail me direct at kkproductions@comcast.net..and thanks

I can't help you with the proper size of the mainsail for your boat, but as far as washing the sails, I always use a mild dish washing detergent like Lux Liquid Detergent to clean my sails once a year.

Boom vangs are pretty easy to install once you install the bales on the boom and at the bottom of the mast. They're so darn expensive to buy all made up. It's almost worth your while to buy the blocks and line and put it together yourself. One of the blocks should have a cam cleat attached to it so that you can snub off the line. Generally the blocks have two sheaves on each block. The boom vang that came with my boat has 5/16" line on it, so you can probably get away with blocks that will take 1/4" line. My mast had a built in strap or bale, on the Tabernacle. My boom has a slot for the straps, and two of the straps were not riveted. So I had to figure out the angle for my boon vang and rivet the strap on permanent. Check out a book by Wallace Ross entitled, Sail Power. It could be in your public library. I think that I refered to this book when I installed the strap on my boom. I use my boom vang for going down wind. I put about 60' of line on my boom vang so that I could use it to raise my mast. Maybe someone else will chime in and provide you with more info on this.

We have a 1987 DS3 w/original Neil Pryde sails. The luff edge is approx 236 inches and tack to clew approx 114 inches. The mast and boom came with the bales pre-set for a boom vang. The boom bale is set 30 inches from the mast end. We bought a Schaefer (blocks) boom vang w/ 1/4" line several years back, and like Joe has mentioned, brand new today you'll probably spend about $150. We live in central IL and sail a local lake that's approx 950 acres, so this set up works fine for us. Hope this info is helpful.
