Did a search on this but could not find info on my questions. I'm in the process of figuring out how to install the washdown pump I bought recently from this site. I'm thinking I'll install it in a dry bildge area where the shower sump pump is installed It's mid ships,is close to the circuit panel where I'm using the 20 amp breaker freed up by the removal of the macerator and close to the now unused macerator thru-hull. The best configuration is to install the pump flat on the bottom of the hull. I'm assuming I should be installing a wood block to fasten the pump to. How do I install the wood block to the fibreglass? Would 5200 be solid enough or should I use something else entirely? Also in the anchor locker, I'm assuming using 3M 101 sealant under the water outlet fitting. Do I use some sort of backing to support the bolts ( #8's or 10's) holding the fitting in place or use washers and nuts on the back side. Working on this fibreglass stuff is all new to me. I'm used to wood framing, drywall, plumbing etc. on a house.

washdown pump

Hello, My boat came with a washdown pump, courtesy of the PO. The install looks neat and clean, and it works. I have no experience with installing one, so I can only tell how it is set up on my boat, and not it is a great installation. The PO mounted the pump right next to the fresh water pump. There was already wood there for the settes. He added a through hull, the output of that goes to the pump. From the pump the hose runs along the side of the hull, it can't be seen, and ends up in the anchor locker. I tried it today and it works very well. I don't see myself using it very much as most of this area has a sandy bottom. I think the kids will get a kick out of it when we swim off the boat and I can spray them down from the boat. Good luck, Barry

I'm also in the middle of installing......

......the same washdown pump that I also bought from this site (see my question about the 12V switch supplied). Using a breaker is the better way to go. I'm installing my pump under the portside settee next to the pump I installed last year for the A/C unit. I plan on "T"ing into the A/C through hull as well. If you want to bond a mounting board to the hull epoxy would probably be best but I'd guess that 5200 would work as well. On my anchor locker fitting I used #8 srews (not bolts) with no backing plate as I don't think this will be subject to high stresses. Mine is mounted to the back of the locker, under the protection of the deck. The glass was fairly thick there and it seems to be solid. Any sealant should be fine.

I bought the pump here also

Back when it was on sale in January or so. I did not want to permanently install the washdown system. I mounted the pump onto a piece of 3/4" plywood that fits in my anchor well atop the anchor rode and can be removed and placed on deck when needed. I predrilled holes before I finished the wood. I bought a reinforced hose to use on the suction side that reaches from the middle of the deck to about a foot into the water. This hose plugs into the strainer on the pump with the supplied quick disconnect fitting. For power I installed a 12V socket on the rear bulkhead of my anchor well. That socket draws power from the windlass hand control switch wiring on the positive side and the negative windlass connection from the battery. Ancor marine 12 gauge tinned wire with crimped and heat shrunk lugs powers the socket from these 2 connection points. On the other side the pump is wired to a 12V plug. If I remember correctly the red wire on the pump is connected to the switch w/ LED. The 2 brown (?) wires on the switch are connected together and to the positive side of the 12V plug. The single black wire is connected to the the other side of the negative side of the 12V plug. I used Ancor marine 12 gauge stranded wire (tinned) between the pre-wired pump wires and the switch. I also crimped these connections and used heat shrink around the crimps. I mounted the switch supplied with the pump to a gray, schedule 80 PVC junction box, ran schedule 80 conduit between the pump and the junction box. Primed & glued the conduit. Filled annular spaces at conduit entrances with silicon. Probably not completely water tight, but the whole setup, including the scrap plywood from Home Depot, conduit and box, cost $20.00.

I also bought this pump from here.

And was wondering where to get the hose for this job. I plan on mounting the pump under the port settee below water line and use a vacant thru hull there. then route the output of the pump up to the anchor locker. Any good sources for hose?

Hose

Dean, this is the type of hose I was thinking of using. http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|51|106370|315127&id=106626 Thanks for the rest of the ideas. I'll try to take some pictures as well, assuming I get it installed correctly.

Hose

That looks to be the same hose I used for my suction side. I got it from Home Depot in a 10' length. I figured the reinforcement would prevent it from collapsing.

McMaster and Carr

I got my hose from Mcmaster and carr www.mcmaster.com . It was the last hose listed on page 99 of their online catalog. High Pressure PVC tubing. It has a reinforcing braid imbedded in the wall. I don't remember the size I used, I think it was 3/4". Click on "tubing" in the first section of the Homepage, then PVC, then single, then reinforced.

Hose

Deadhead, The pump puts out 75 psi. max and that type of hose is listed for pressurized systems. Other hoses listed for non-pressurized. Tom, that looks like the same hose only less expensive, being non-marine use. ;)

Interested in location

Add me to the list of buying the pump back in the winter but with other projects taking priority, I haven't even taken it out of teh box. I thought that the pump would be more towards the anchor well and not in the main cabin near the thru-hulls. sounds like most of you installed the pump midship where access to the thru hull and fuse panel are closer and ran hose forward to the anchor locker....is that correct? again, I haven't looked at the directions yet so it may very well clearly state that. This is my install YMMV

There was plenty of space up forward of the water tank. Jim

Add me to the list of bought it last winter

and have had it up to the boat several times and back... and finally took it out of the box last weekend. I figured on putting it mid ships, close to the thru-hull to keep the distance from water to pump the least to minimize the dry running time of the pump before priming. Other issue is distance to power source and wire sizing. I'm using an unused 20 amp breaker in the main panel which is mid ships, so wanted to keep it close to not require too large of a wire and length. Jim, I checked out your site several times last weekend trying to decide where and how to install this thing. Part of the challenge is having the boat 2 hrs. away and only having weekends for work or sailing time..... guess what usually wins out ;D

Add me to the club of buying washdown pump on this forum. I started it last fall and doing same install as Scott, midship thru-hulls,been waxing the boat the main sail way with 9227 makita. and looking really good so far. Boat going in water next week while we are in the Grenadines for 10 days on a Moorings 47 catamaran so not unhappy we are way behind with splash. I will also take pictures when we get back to finish install,I'll look to see how you all do. Plenty of photo's to follow of Grenadines.;D ;D Nick

Installed mine this winter

I bought one too, such a deal! and I was going to install it in the anchor locker but that turned into such a project to get the reinforced hose from the bilge area up to the locker without getting in the way of the windlass chain and rode so I decided to keep it simple and having a center cockpit I put the outlet mid ship inside a lazaret. I installed a tee on the toilet seacock and ran this supply hose to the pump and from the pump I went to the outlet location, one thought was do I drill a hole and have this hose cock sticking out some where but I ended up taking a piece of stainless and making a bracket for the hose fitting to mount in the lazaret so when I open the lid and its right there. The coiled hose won't make it to the bow but I'm going to cut a hunk of garden hose and put a new fitting on it and that will get me half way to the bow and I'll connect the coiled hose to that. This washdown system works great!
