Since this will be the first time for me, A cherry! After the long winter of sitting on the hard dry land, should I throughly wash down the boat - topside before applying any bottom paint. Or does it matter. The boat be dirty!!!! Jim S/V Java

I Would

If it were me I'd wash it down. If you're doing the work in a boat yard I'd recommend covering the topside with plastic dropcloths to avert those "boatyard blues". If you don't know about that then ask someone in the yard. The discoloration will go away in sunshine in a couple weeks or so. To tape the dropcloths down use the "blue" 3M tape and not regular masking tape or duct tape otherwise there can be problems geting the tape off cleanly. If the hull is really dirty I'd wash it too and then after the painting is done I'd go over it with wet rags and wipe off the loose dust and give it a good coat of wax. This way when you go to splash her she'll look really nice. Then in a few weeks the topsides can be waxed and she'll look like a proper yacht.
