Wash down hose

I do have a life, but to date, I have yet to find anyone or any documentation that can inform me as to why my dock hose is chronically covered in a sticky residue. I wash it and coat it with a silicon spray but every time I use it to spray off the boat it is sticky and discolored again. Is there a technique or a preventative maintenance process I should be performing? Is there a hose material I should be using that is immune/resistant to salt water?

Haven't Got A Clue

Maybe it's something in the air (air quality)? How close to an airport flight path are your marinas? Is the hose left out in the weather? I've got one of those cheap 50ft green hoses, semitransparant plastic type with the webbed nylon inside that you can see through the plastic and I don't have any problem with sticky stuff. It's got to be at least 4 or 5 years old but after each use I roll it up and put it in either the dock box or on the boat. Condition-wise it's as good as the day it was new. The only sticky-stuff we get right now is seagull bird poop and blackberry stains from all the birds, including starlings which migrated out west.

Tar?

Is it tar the the wood the dock is made from? Like the stick feeling of a telephone pole?

The Sun

Hi Bob, I have the same problem here in Texas. I am convinced that it is the UV rays that cause the hose to become sticky after a few years. About ever 5 years I just toss the hose and start over.

Nope, nope, nope

Its not air pollution, tar or UV. I use the exact same hose, outside, rolled-up at home. The phenomenon happens within weeks and is a function of the marine (salty?) environment. Seems I'm not the only one though.

Sticky in Seattle

My dock mate's hose, which is left hanging and coiled at the dock, has been infected with the "sticky". I thought it was just an isolated event. I will not be able to sleep tonight knowing that the Sticky is bent on world domination.

Its the Sun!

I clean my hose and electrical cord twice thru the summer with Island Girl Pink Cleaner, and follow with a thin coat of the protectant, lasts for several months.
