Was it a Craftsman ?

Trying to sail in very light airs yesterday we hear the "Tink, CLACK" that usually accompanies a piece of rigging failing and hitting the deck. A cotter pin broke allowing the pivot pin holding boom to gooseneck to work it's way out. I stick in a screwdriver and lash it in place, dropped the main and started motoring. When I explained the jury rig to my wife she asked "Was it a Craftsman ?"
"No, it's a rusted out POS from Harbor Freight, keep your fingers crossed."

So which was the rusted out POS - the cotter pin or the screwdriver?

My first question would be " why not just use the spare pin for the gooseneck?" as I commence the uncomfortable, judgemental browbeating. Its probably in your toolbox alongside all those spare cotter pins and rings, just above the high quality screwdrivers.

Last summer, I looked forward and noticed a pin on the deck. Oh, and a shroud swinging in the wind. 20 knot winds that day. Twas exciting.

Of course you lashed (a good Boy Scout term) the POS screwdriver in place using the wrist lanyard that you had installed on the handle of the screwdriver. One never wants to drop those tools because they WILL go overboard and they CAN NOT swim! Be Prepared, be very prepared.

She probably wanted to make sure you did not get a screwdriver out of HER toolbox. You know- the ones with the pink handles? Not that you WOULD.

:plus: A small box with spare pins, keepers, nuts/bolts, tools, needs to be standard equipment at all times on every boat.

Where do you suppose the rusty screwdriver and paracord came from if not the "spares locker" ?
