Friendly advise from a customer that was treated extremely bad. Before ordering a GPS, I called Boat fix to confirm it was in stock. They assured me it was, and would send it out 2-day express.... That was 3 weeks ago. Since then, I have tried my credit card was charged, but no GPS. I talked with the owner Less Hall, and he was rude, unwilling to help, didn't return calls, and made my life a living hell. Just a friendly warning to my fellow sailors, do not support this company, or you'll be sorry......

Alternatives?

If you can, try Consumers Marine Electronics (see link). They are good, least expensive, quick (next day to me) and reputable. Good Luck

When any company fails to deliver

Cancel the order in writing (email will do). Call your credit card issuer to notify them that you've done so and are revoking the charge because the goods have not been delivered when promised. Be sure to also state that you've been forced to buy elsewhere and will refuse the order from this merchant if/when they ever decide to ship it. Your credit card issuer will place the charge in dispute and notify the merchant of a pending chargeback. They'll also send you a form that MUST be filled out and sent back...be sure to include on it that it's too late for the merchant to make good on the order, you've already bought elsewhere and you'll refuse the goods if they're shipped. Attach a copy of your letter or email cancelling the order to this form when you return it. The most important thing is a paper trail--complaints/order cancellations--including reasons--in writing are proof of dates and who said what...phone calls provide no proof of anything.

Peggy is correct

John, what Peggy refers to is the "Fair Credit Billing Act" and what you must do is contact your credit card company in writing...phone calls will not do since the act says you must notify the company in writing. Most credit card companies you can go on line and do this electronically. Either way good luck. I have had success by calling the vendor when needed, and telling them my intentions about contacting the credit card company to dispute the charge. It seems to work and gets the vendor to correct the problem. My 2 cents. ...Larry...

Great Advice - What a multi-talented group!

Well said. I work for a major credit card company. Arbitration is one of the great benefits of purchasing merchandise on your plastic. Normally the issuing bank can resolve this with the merchant by sending a chargeback. You don't see it on your statement (unless the timing is off), and the merchant does not get paid. If the merchant does not accept the situation, they can appeal to the credit card association and they would resolve it. I would imagine that it will never get that far as the merchant may already be known as problematic and they would have to produce evidence that you received the merchandise.

Hmmmm...

...sounds like another "Sails4free.com" to me. I got boned by that one for 30 bucks.

Boatfix.com is a legitimate online vendor

They've been around for a while, and are one of the owners/sponsors of boatered.com, which is arguably the best online forums for powerboaters, and where I'm a forum moderator. The problem is, they're short staffed and get overloaded with more orders than they can handle sometimes...which leads to complaints like the one that started this thread. Unfortunately, they tend to stonewall instead of 'fess up to a problem, and the other partner in boatered (I don't know just how much if any of boatfix he owns) has a MAJOR attitude problem. Sometimes it's necesssary to hit even legitimate businesses in the head with a 2 x 4 to get their attention...the 2x4 in this case being a cancelled order and a credit card chargeback.

Maybe an aberration?

I have spent several thousand dollars at Boatfix.com (mostly on my powerboats) with no complaints yet. Their prices for most things are the best that I can find on the web. Maybe someone was having a bad day, like Peggy said. Disputing the credit card charge will either make them deliver or get you the money back. I'll see if I can forward this complaint to their attention.
