I too, am looking for somewhere warmer, to sail more than 3-4 months, depending on the weather, and that's only on the weekends.I leave my boat at the lake, but it's an hour away. I'm a single man, that has to work for another 3 yrs.I live right in the middle of Oregon. It's a sunny, blue sky day, with the high of the day being 34 degrees.I've thought of Pugent sound,by Seattle, but it's not a whole lot warmer,as most boats have heaters and it rains more there then here.I've thought of the Calif.delta and the coast from Santa Cruz to Santa Barbara and Oxnard.I've got an older 28 ft.motorhome.I don't know if theirs affordable places, close enough to the water, that I could sail after work and live in my motorhome,or sell it and rent an apartment.I need to be able to sail more often,to get better at it.I've only been sailing 2yrs. and really enjoy it.I feel like I'm draging my feet trying to figure out which way to go.I'm willing to quit my job and find another somewhere else,as long as I'll be able to sail more often.I'm looking forward to some replys. Thanks JIM PS. Is a 22' Catalina big enough for some coastal sailing, as thats what I have?

Great Weather

Jim, It's a long way to relocate but Houston and the Galveston Bay complex is a GREAT place to sail year round. Our winters here are very mild if you even want to call it winter. The drawback to Galveston is it is not a beautiful body of water. The bottom is mostly sand and due to currents and the Mississippi River the water never gets super clear. Offshore the water clears to a beautiful blue. Galveston Bay is a VERY large bay complex with varous areas to sail and anchor. The Clear Lake area is one of North America's larger yachting centers with hundreds and hundreds if not thousands of sailboats. Galveston is not a deep complex, on avg it's 10-12 feet deep with reefs and channel spoil areas. The big drawback to Galveston is that there is no distance destination to sail to unless you sail up or down the coast. There are no islands offshore. Due to onshore flow, Galveston seldom receives freezing temp's. With a stiff coldfront it will dip close to freezing but that is only a few times a year. Our sailing season runs from Late Feb-Nov. You should be able to locate many sites referencing Galveston and sailing in the Clear Lake and Kemah area. The Kemah Boardwalk is another big draw to sailors. There is a marina next to the Boardwalk. The whole place is owned by the Landry Corp. It's not the tropics or Hawaii, but we can sail year round. Morris Feel free to ask any questions you might have.

California Delta is nearly year round.

Jim: The California Delta is nearly year round boating. The winds a very light during the fall and winter (unless there are storms). The summertime temps are probably in the high 80's to mid-90's most of the summer. There are a few days when we get into the 100's (we spend a lot of time in the water during those times). Winter time temps can be very cool, but seldom gets below 40 and there can be some very nice winter afternoons (last weekend was in the mid 70's). Travel from Central Or. to the delta is a long trip for a weekend, but may be worth it. We commute from Carson City to the Delta nearly year round. It is about 160 miles for us.

So. Calif. has it all but that affordable part

is tricky, there are a few people who live in Mexico and commute to San Diego. Do $500,000 Condos make you nervous ? Cheapest apartment anywhere near the ocean is at least $1400 a month or more.

I have been up and down the West Coast and East Coast...I've been just about every place one could go on the Gulf Coast. Galveston Bay is damn nice. Slips are in the $6 to $7 per foot range and you can get a job doing about anything you like. We sail all year long...except the late summer months...too hot...night sailing only. It was in the high sixties today, but will be down in the mid fifthies on Sataurday. Probably won't sail this weekend. I realize Texas can be a big joke, but Galveston Bay is for real. Gary

How about San Felipe in Baja

You obviously own a MacGregor/we live in South San Felipe where water in sea of cortez is usally smooth but can quickly get choppy/we are seriously thinking about getting a 26X/but since motoring can be an option on sea of cortez we are wondering how Mc gregor handles in a good chop/we hear they wander on the course under power. Do Not...

come to Florida. It sucks and you have to deal with hurricanes for 6 months of the year. Unless we open up Cuba, it's just not worth it!

Warm weather sailing

Try Monterey California. Bring your motorhome to Salinas, only 15 miles from Monterey and living standards are quite low. You can find work in Montery also. You will be sailing in 5 to 15 mph wind year round. You might consider getting a little bit larger boat as you will be in the ocean, but still in a bay. Santa Cruz is 45 miles. Sailing is grate there too. Have fun.

Oxnard

Lived aboard in Oxnard for 2 years. It does not have the image that the more expensive areas have but it is not as expensive either. It is 11 miles to Anacapa. Santa Cruz is well within range for an overnight. Catalina is 12 or 14 hours. For the Floridians, no bugs, no heat, cool nights, no rain, no fire ants no land crabs no snakes, low humidity and generally good winds. I lived in Homestead, the kids did like Monkey Jungle.
