So the laminated beam for the compression post gets epoxied in and the mouse fir comes off the cabin top.

I'm hoping to finally clean the Racor fuel filter and fire up the Yanmar. I'm anxious to see how the new temp gauge works. I'll probably do a bit of varnishing, too, but that'll be mostly on parts I've taken to the basement. I may take a look at a new battery charger I have. I've got the 30-year-old original charger still going, but it's not one I'd leave on when I'm away from the boat, particularly as I told the insurance company I'd already replaced it!

Finally made it out to the boat for the first time since haul out in November. Dropped the genoa, flaked and bagged it. Threw some antifreeze in the toilet. Set up to flush the engine with coolant...battery 1 indicated a full charge but my cold intolerant 2QM15 wouldn't start :-(

Did get the cover on, except for over the cockpit...since I will have to return tomorrow to charge the battery and try again.

Made it out again, just after the sun set. Ran power to her and got her charging. Almost started...but of course not. Left the charger on, took my Wife to dinner, returned and she fired right up. Flushed the antifreeze in and shut her down. Put the cover on. Worst case she can ride out the winter now. Batteries are nearly fully charged. I usually leave them on board fully charged...because they are heavy and I am lazy. I would be happier if I could return and charge them a little more...or remove them. We will see!

Hey Bob: When it's cold like that, spray some starting fluid (ether) onto a cloth and set it in front of the air intake. It should fire right up. Then remove the cloth and set it on deck to let remaining ether evaporate. My 2GM really likes a little "joy juice". But ether burns a lot hotter, so don't use any more than you have to. and don't spay it into the intake - that's too much. But you probably know this already.

Happy New Year to all.

If you can leave power out to the boat try putting a clamp light with a 100W incandescent bulb (ha those are getting scarce) in the engine compartment. that keeps thigs warm enough to keep the oil a little thinner and easier to start.

I also use some inexpensive float chargers on my batteries while I am away, once they are fully charged.

Fully charged batteries store well when cold I am told.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I rigged a line from the compression release on the cylinders to the cockpit. If I release pressure and spin her up she will usually fire right up, but I usually don't try to run her in January.

I never understood why Yanmar was so reluctant to install glow plugs in their smaller diesel engine designs. My ol S2 with a YSM could've used the glow plug to warm up the engine. Makes my 30 year ol Universal fire right up every time on my C-30. With out the Universals would never start!

I agree. I need to buy a jump start pack for this and other uses.

With your automotive heaps, Bob, I'm surprised you don't already have several jump start packs! I've been through a bunch over the years, and have one now that I like. It's lasted more than a year and, for something from Northern Tool, that's pretty good. It's got a surprisingly good air compressor, an inverter, AND a 5 volt USB outlet, which comes in handy. I've got a switchable, 12 volt male plug I keep with it, with two longish leads, that come in very handy for checking power runs on the boat. I think my only gripe is that the slide switches can shift without much provocation, so I tape them down.

Got me there. Just bought another Jag for my Wife too. Wasn't worth putting money into our 1989 XJS...since it is the wrong color...according to my Wife. New one is a 1990 convertible in British Racing Green. Wish me luck with it...I'm going to need it no doubt...
