Warm up knob/lever???

I have 3 different manuals for our yanmar 2gm20f, all of them say while checking the injector timing, to put the throttle at half and pull the "warm up knob/lever". I have no such thing. What is this refering to? Where is it connected on the engine side? Any answers are greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone out there checks their injector timing and can answer some questions, I would appreciate it. We are stumped on the apparent readings we are getting and no "professionals" seem to have the answers. Thanks Doug

injector timing

I don't believe you have any "warm up knob" on your engine. The only engines I can think of are the larger Yanmars (50 hp +) that have a cold start knob that looks very similar to the engine stop control, but is mounted down in the engine compartment. In some training classes at our Yanmar distributor, we reviewed two different techniques/tools for setting injection timing, but I don't remember ever discussing a warm-up knob. For what it is worth, we work on many GM series Yanmars, and we NEVER have to mess with injection timing. Generally, our Yanmar distributor (Mack Boring in NJ) is very quick to discourage folks from messing with it. I would eliminate other possible sources of your problem before tackling the timing project.

Possibly referring to single lever control

They may be saying to pull the knob on a single lever control and then advance the throttle in neutral.

You might want to repost in the Diesel engine shared forum and pick Gordon's brain on this.

No such Thing

Doug, I asked the same questions a couple of years ago. First, a Yanmar 2GM20F does not have a "Warm Up Knob". Why the manuals reference one I haven't a clue. These so called "manuals" leave alot to be desired. Second, the injector timing on this engine is controled by a spacer/gasket between the Main injector pump and the top of the manifold (front of engine). It is my understanding that the timing should never have to be adjusted. I highly recomend purchasing the Yanmar Service Manual. It covers this and everything else pertaing to Yanmar Engines. It cost me around $40 a couple of years ago through Torrenson Marine.

I "think" I do...

have a warm-up knob on my 2GM20F. I have a new 320 and it is on the throttle lever. When you pull up on this knob (more like a inverted cup), you pull it out of gear before moving forward to increase the RPM's. I neve use it, since there is a clutch disengage button right below the throttle, but it is there and is documented in the manual...

Warm Up lever

Doug I don't know anything about diesel timing but I do have a warm - up lever on my 1997 H280. It is on the gear shift at the console. It is a pull out knob and disengages the gears so the engine can be reved w/o forward motion.
