great advice!

WOW its great to get such great advice in such a short time! as others have stated, yes i am planing on taking sailing lessons, thay start in may , I have allso met a few sailers that said thay would help me along the way to getting my sea legs. Depending on the weather ( and my sick girlfrined!) i think ill go over to the lake hefner sailing club and see what i can find out about the boats other sailers have on this lake. This lake is allmost round, and gets good wind most all the time, the sailing club is big into racing, and with the size and shape of the lake and its so close to my house , i should be able to get a lot of sailing time in asap. I suppose getting a trailerable boat makes a lot of sence, I have to admit , the hours i spent dreaming of being behind that wheel on the H27,, thay were good but reality is setting in, and im just ready to sail. Thanks to all of you that have shared your thoughts so far, it really has been helpfull not only to me but others im shure!

Have you considered

Sailing a little boat for a season. Something like a Lazer, or Flying Scott. These are certainly not weekenders, nor will they handle four of six guests at a time. What they are is a lot of fun, and you can and will learn a lot sailing one of them. You can sail one of these for a year, learn a lot, and probably break about even when and if you sell.

Oday daysailer

The Oday Daysailer at 16' 9" has a small cuddy for storage of equipment, or sleeping in a pinch, but no sitting headroom. At 575# it is really easy to trailer and sail alone, and you will learn lots in quick order. It handles like a small boat, but feels and sails like a bigger boat. With trailer and sails in good condition, they can be had for around $2000. There are plenty of them, turn over is frequent, and the demand is high, so it is easy to pass on to another sailor when you are ready to move up in a year or so. check the http://daysailer.org/index.php website and forums for more information and boats available for sale in your area.

Hunter 82? 37 Cutter Wherever the wind takes me
Columbia 23

A friend of mine has a Columbia 23T that is really nice to sail. Lots of room in the cockpit and a pretty decent little cabin. No room to stand but plenty to sit and relax. Honestly the only complaint I have about the boat is that it does not have lifelines. It trailers pretty well also. Manny

One of the few boats I've seen in the 25' range with wheel steering is the US Yachts 25. It's trailerable and has a fixed keel drawing about 3 feet(I think) There's on at my marina that can probably be bought for around $2,000 as the guy has been trying to sell it for 2 years. It's got a brand new Suzuki outboard (which is probably worth $2,000)and is a sweet little boat, although it does have a couple of leaks around ports. Any used boat is gonna have some flaws but from your previous posts I'd say you could probably handle it. I think any of the boats mentioned would be good and I'd echo the advice about maybe taking the sailing course before buying.

You have the right boat

My opinion, You say your pretty handy, the list of required work to upgrade the 27 is far less than what you are ready to spend on another boat. Standing rigging will run you 800, another Yanmar rebuilt or used 3000, running rigging 600, and nothing will give you the type of hands on knowledge your looking for better than doing it yourself. That model for a newbe gives you reasonable displacement and unless you intend to sail extended distances it has ample storage for weeklong trips. The only negative the boat has and you can check archives on this site is the underpowered 1GM and the pan bilge. I owned the same model for 22 years and it taught me enough to charter and upgrade to a 28000# boat. I see these boats for as little as 5000 dollars on brokerage pages frequently and don't understand why.

catch 22

Tom H , i do see what you are saying, when i first bought this boat thats what i was seeing, the end result, and i do love working on boats. One thing in oklahoma is that in the boat yard im in, if we can call it that, thay have no lifts, very few hear do ,their is one in the sailing club , but getting in is another story, not easy and could take a long time. so getting my boat off a trailer and on stands will cost $800, and a repeat when its done. and thats getting a crain in hear , the cheapest i found was $600 and the price could go up no garentee on cost. should I keep the trailer ,thats a $3 to $4000 investment thats just sitting their for a year or two and becouse my boat is on it, their is no way to make any money by renting it out to others or getting another boat while this boat is on it, a lot of money and up keep for little or no return. The scrap value on this boat as i see it (correct me if im wrong anyone need advice! ) Lead keel 3000 lb. @ .50 is $1500 all teak wood inside say $500 most has been removed and re-finished yanmar and control panel $400 ? this could be high, i dont know . 8 portlights (3 only parts) $200 8 24"stanchons @ $20 each $160 front railing ? $50 new water pump paid $100 $50 mast and toe railing 200lb $100 only weight @.50 lb winches sails ETC $200 have no idea how much on the wheel stearing ???? so scrap is just over $3k without wheel stearing. should be able to get $3500 for the trailer. with that said, no i am not going to make any money on her, ( that was not my plan)just come close to breaking even and learning some along the way. I am allso not a rich man, got more time than money ! If i can remove the boat from the trailer with out using a crain id love to hear how its done, becouse that would be an option. then i could sell the trailer and use that money on the boat, then rent a trailer to get her in the water. As you can see im just not shure what to do ! Thanks and sorry for the ramblings!

Most likely

It's just not that fun. you need to jack up the trailer frame a few inches all around, then find places to put jackstands that can support the boat temporarily, and chain them together. Then you drop the trailer and pull the trailer forward as far as you can without knocking over your jackstands. Then you move jackstands around again (so you will need at least 6). It may take 3 or 4 repetitions, but eventually you will get the trailer out from under it, then you put blocks under the keel and take the weight off the jackstands. Without seeing the trailer, it may not even be doable. Another option is to grease + carpet the pads, tie the keel to a tree, and pull forwrad slowly, setting up stnads once you have room at the back of the boat, then blocks under the keel and stands forward of it, then stands at the front (I'm just thinking off the wall here.) Or weld a cradle that you can pull out from underneath. Jack trailer up, place cradle in, drop trailer, pull out. Why do you want it on stands, anyway?? Usually a boat on a trailer stays on the trailer? Sell it once you're seaworthy, even if you don't have a mast.

practical sailor

comes out monthly, they have write ups on almost every sailboat, and hardware, check your library. the biggest lesson i learned is if the keel is to shallow the boat will not sail into the wind ,as with a 22' oday with a 2 foot shallow keel. good luck

One Word

Catalina 22. Go with the swing keel. These boats are wonderful to sail and hold their value in case you move up. If you think you will like sailing, and it sounds like you do, I would skip the small boats like Sunfish and Lasers. Get something you and your girlfriend and others can enjoy. My .02

first time

I think u should look into a small older boat rhodes 19 , oday mariner catalina 22, oday 22,23 24 25 26 . there is a trailor sailor out ther called the west wight potter 15 or 17 not goodfor 4 to 6 people but certainly ok for you and 1 or 2 more. we all envision lots of company but in truth I sail single handd more than any thing else.I enjoy it when the wind is up and when it is nt as well. I sail a 26 oday currently but my first boat was a 17 foot daysailor and I could carry 4 adults and still be able to move about .I find the 26 is easy enough to sail alone actually easier that the 17 because on the smaller boat weight transfer and hiking out have a lot to do with sailing that particular boat. In so far as the other boat ,do you have boat haulers out there where you are they could take it out of the water for you and set it on stands or blocks in you yard . I have my boat hauled every year except this year to my partners house and he sets it alone on blocks and wood. Total cost to me is under 200 one way, hauled and blocked. I think it may be about 5 miles or so door to door. Good luck

Go sailing the first year, buy later

If you don't have a lot of money now, you'll have even less after you buy. Also less time if you have to fix it up. I think Mac has the right suggestion. Take some lessons and fart around in a dink for a year. I'm wary of "I have also met a few sailers that said thay would help me along the way to getting my sea legs." Instructors who know how to teach are one thing, helpful friends are another. An organized introduction to sailing will go farther and be more complete than tagging along and learning possible bad habits. Unload the anchor/project/albatros and get in a small fun boat for starters. You'll have fun and give yourself some time to think about what you want down the road.
