Wanted: Retractable Keel

Help!!! I am trying to find a 27' to 30' Catalina that has a retrackable Keel

Wing Keel Option

Hi Mike,While Catalina only makes the 22 and 25 (older) or 250 (newer) in swing keel versions; you might find a wing keel 27 or 30 acceptable. Towing weight will be considerable though as the 27 alone displaces more than 7,000 lbs and the 30 displaces more than 10,000 lbs. So your towing vehicle would have to be a pretty stout rig - one-ton truck or something.Bill Holcomb

Mike: I have a quick addition to what Bill posted: The catalinas larger than 25 feet are wider than normally allowed on the road, meaning that you would need to get a Wide Load Permit from each state you pass through. These permits must be obtained prior to the move and the planned route is included and must be followed.Barry

Thanks for the responses, they were helpful. I am getting back to a seller tonight to possibly buy a 1979 Catalina, anyone who can answer before 6:45 PST will be helpful.Questions:1. Retractable/swing keel... How far down does it go below the boat when on the trailer?2.Do these boats also come with a helm as opposed to a tiller?3.Do they have inboard engines or outboard4. Your questions indicate an almost complete lack of basic sailboat knowledge. It would be wise to do some reading and a lot of looking and talking to sailors before investing in a boat.
