On my H23 (1985 with a Kenyan mast), only the backstay attaches to the masthead.. on the part that protrudes rearward (known as the 'crane'). A pin secures it to the end of the backstay which terminates in an eye fitting. The forestay attaches to the front of the mast approx. 3 feet below the masthead (just above where the jib halyard exits) using a t-ball fitting.

Sorry.. I don't have any pictures handy, but you can get an idea of general location from the sail plan drawing.

Go under the boat information for the 23 and you will note the new section which has more inforation which Phil Herring has added which should help you trememendously.
