I'll be on vacation in Seattle ( Bellevue ) the first three weeks of August. I'm an active sailer / beer-can racer, and own a Cat. 27. Can anybody hook me up with some sailing / racing while I'm up there? Thanks, in advance. ;D

Good news, bad news

Actually it will be bad news first...in Seattle, August is the one windless month we have. So not many races are held then. On the good side, August is the one month of good weather we have. But keep your hopes up, I'm sure there will be some yacht clubs that will still hold weekly informal races you could attend. I think Maydenbauer yacht club has informal beer-can races you could get in on (& they are out of Bellevue).

Beer can races

Hi Jim - I'd say it's mostly good news (although Windwalker is right about prevailing winds in August), since there are a number of fun, casual race series running in the summer. Of the less serious variety, Tuesday evening's Duck Dodge in Lake Union is a local favorite. The Friday night series in Lake Washington out of Kirkland is a good time also. More serious racing happens on the weekends (Shaw Island Classic Aug 6th, SYC McMurdy Cup Aug 13/14, CYC Moonlight Race Aug 20 - ok not that serious). When you get into town, head on down to Shilshole Marina in Ballard and start talking to people and read the bulletin board. Have a beer at the Sloop Tavern down the road and you're likely to find a sailor to catch up with. Feel free to drop me an email when you are in town - if I'm not available to take you out sailing I can probably hook you up with someone who can! Best, Trevor trevor@offshorestore.net

Contacts

Jim - don't know how much help this is going to be, but here is the schedule and contact information for the Duck Dodge races that Trevor mentioned during August: http://www.48north.com/calendar/aug2005.htm You might try these guys (Seattle Singles Sailing Club) - It looks like some of their members participate in a Thursday Night series Downtown - Which looked absolutely spectacular from the shore last Thursday (I had finished scrubbing April IV in preparation for Catalina Days and was driving through town on the way home just in time to see all the spinakers at the gybe mark) http://www.oz.net/ssyc/ Good Luck! Tim...

I think I heard you were at the Catalina Day's last Saturday. If so, I'm sorry I missed you. I couldn't bring my boat, but I dropped in to say hi to some old acquaintances around 4:00pm. I was hoping to meet you, but maybe some other time.

I'm going to try and do the Duck Dodge August 9th. That's Tropical night. One of the most popular nights. Should be around eighty boats attending. This should not be missed. Email at jobawhite@earthlink.net if interested. Don't be deterred by the spam blocker.
