I have a Hunter 30 1979. The standing rigging is 30 years old so time to redo the rigging along with other things. I would like to repaint the mast while it is down. I am wondering if other owners have done this process and what product did they use. Has it held up well. The mast has allot of oxidation so will need to clean and prep. I am looking for suggestions on cleaning agents and paint to use. I will have about two weeks while old rigging is sent to SecoSouth. They had the best price even with shipping old to Florida and back to California. So any help would be great.

Thanks,

Carl

When I had a mast repainted the shop used automotive paint - Imron, I believe, and the result was fantastic - very good finish and it lasted well.

I wasn't involved in the prep (after the sanding, that is) but I believe all aluminum requires a primer/sealer before a finish coat. I'd talk to the folks that are going to do the work.

FWIW, I did all the equipment and paint stripping and it was NOT an easy job. In our case, the mast had alot of years in salt water and the galvanic corrosion was difficult to work around. After the painting I reinstalled equipment and got the mast ready for stepping - that was easier.

Repainted a H27 Mast & Boom

I repainted the mast and boom on my previous boat. I used Interlux Brightside which is an easy to use 1 part poly paint. As with any paint job, prep is 90 percent of the job. I spent a lot of time sanding and feathering chips in the original paint, repriming and water rubbing prior to the actual paint job. I had to wait several days for optimal wind conditions because I used a conventional air compressor and spray gun to apply the Brightside.

The finished product turned out beautiful and was still in great condition when I sold the boat about 5 years later.
