I'd like to learn about sailing and think I would eventually like to buy a boat in the 20' to 30' foot range. I have owned a small motor boat in the past, but have only been sailing in a sabot. Where should I begin? A sailing class? or join a yatch club or what? Thanks for any suggestions!

Starting from scratch

Pick up the book "Sailing for Dummies" to help understand the basics. Hang around the marina. Meet a few boat owners. Watch closely and ask if you can learn to crew. Many boat owners are willing to do a little instruction in exchange for a little help. As you learn, you'll also get to experience a few different boats. This will help you get a better handle on what you want in your first boat.

Billy, we began by buying a sailboat...

Then learned by studying and practicing what we studied. Others have cruised their local marina offering to crew on other boats to gain experience. Most skippers like the company. Your local library should have a nice selection of books on sailing, trimming, etc. Terry

take a class

ASA has a good starter course. You get hands on training and it takes a full weekend. Its around 350 to 450$ but if you want to start off on the right foot this would be a good place to start.

Sailing in L. A.

You are fortunate to be in LA if you want to learn to sail - cheaper than most areas to charter a boat & lots of beginner-friendly places to sail. I took ASA 104 last year from Bluewater Sailing in Marina del Rey - Awesome folks, grat class. Peter Damisch has an amazing sailing resume, and he is a great teacher. Check it out at the link below. I used to sail small catamarans all over So Cal - if I could handle the crowdedness of it all, I'd consider going back 'for the water'. Best o' Luck,
