Is there anyone out there who uses a Wallas Diesel Heater? What are the ups and downs of owning this type of heater? Do you love it or hate it?

Wallas 30D in a Hunter 36..love it.

I think there only one distributer...ScanMarine in Seattle. Love the unit, I installed it myself last year. The unit is a work of art....craftmanship at its best. I thought I was getting a HiFi receiver the way they boxed the unit and the way it looked. For a bigger boat, you might consider the 40D. Good luck...I think Fred from this forum has one too.

Have a 3000DX

Which is an older version of the 30D (10,500 btu) on our Catalina 42. We liveaboard in San Francisco Bay. We use it constantly - 10 to 12 hours a day in the winter at the dock, at anchor, or underway. We love it. I have learned to service the unit myself. It is basically a very simple machine and beautifully built. The folks at Scan Marine have been great and spot on with the few questions I've had regarding parts and service. The furnace does have to be de-carboned about every 500 hours or when it gets slow to start. De-carboning is a simple and quick procedure that takes about an hour. It sips fuel too. About .3 liters/hour running full blast. Rodney S/V Sashay SF Bay

No complaints about mine.

And Rodney, Scan winked at me and said that de-carbonizing only needs to be done each 1000 hours. Just hit the reset when the first 500 hours start flashing. I'll try to post a picture as a TEST post. No one on this thread needs to see mine. But I've been having trouble uploading. Beware of the dreaded red x. :) P.S. Well, I found the obvious problem. The photos were, for some reason, defaulting to the network drive directory. I fixed it. But it still won't work. Computers! The photos I was referencing are #s 51 & 52 on my web site. :(

No reset on mine

Fred, thanks for the info. There is no reset on mine nor does it flash anything at 500 hours. My heater is the model preceding the 30D. I just de-carbon it when ever it gets slow to ignite. I'm only guessing about the 500 hour interval. Compared to my neighbors with Webasto & Espar heaters, the Wallas must be very clean burning based on the soot left on their transoms :). And the Wallas doesn't sound like a jet engine! Very nice website and nice job on the restoral of Epitome. Rodney S/V Sashay SF Bay

Thanks Rodney!

And thanks too for reminding me of that jet engine sound and smoke from my original Espar. Worst product I've ever owned. And not just in its' class. It was the WORST, period!

Thanks everyone for your input!

Thank you for the information from your experiences! We are purchasing the Wallas 30D here very soon. What's the "sound" like from the fan of this system? From what we gather, this system is very quiet and it seems to work for fairly large boats (42', etc.). We have a Jouet 940 which is nearly 33'. We have 2 aft cabins in which we plan to install the Wallas in one of these. Where did you folks mount yours? Inside the boat spaces or in a lazarette? Any information you can provide will earn you an evening of wining and dining at our slip in Semiahmoo! Thanks for your input.

In the Lazerette

Becky, I mounted our Wallas in the lazerette. The C-42 MkII has a shelf in each port & starboard lazerette. On these boats, the lazerette is large enough to crawl into and work. I built a L shaped bracket to hold the heater and mounted the bracket to the shelf. There was enough room above the shelf to get the heater high enough to remove the bottom cover for servicing without removing the whole heater. There was also a ready made vent right above the heater to supply good fresh air. We used the separate 10 liter day tank which is mounted right under the heater. What do they sound like? Well, there is a muted rush of air sound by the forced air blower and a very slight whistle or whir from the combustion fan. Outside the boat the whistle from the combustion fan is barely audible. These heaters are stepless... in other words, they throttle up and down depending on heat needs rather than switching on & off like other heaters. The noise level varies depending upon how much heat is being put out. Overall, they are very quiet. The stepless operation also means that these heaters are very miserly on power consumption since they only go through one startup cycle per use. Once the heater has ignited, the burner is self powered and the heater shuts the glow plug off. Only the fans & fuel pump draw power. Thank you Rodney!

Thank you Rodney! If you ever make it to Semiahmoo, we'll treat you to a night of fine wining and dining! The photos were very helpful as we have a similar situation in our aft cabin that would allow us to get to the bottom of the heater for servicing. We also like the idea of having a separate fuel tank for the heater and we could put that in the lazarette which is on the other side of the bulkhead from where we'll be mounting the heater. Once we install this, we'll post a photo. Thanks again! Becky Panache
