Cool shot Rick, I guess I will be doing similar next week,on to a truck instead of into the water(unfortunatly). I have just purchased a Reliance 44 in Ont. CA. so haveing it trucked out to BC. I know, what not sail it around? Beleive me I wish I could put the truckin fees towards the boat. Logistics just will not cooperate. Hope to have it ready by next year.I will post some pics of the load(travel lift) and the unload (crane) Every hour you sail adds an hour to your life.

Hi Bill - Glad to hear you got it home. Let the fun begin! What are you going to do to it? Looks like you have it blocked-up on a farm or something. Sorry to burst your bubble, but there's no way you'll ever see 10 kts. I'm circumnavigating and have 26,000 nmi on Voyager and the most I've ever seen was 9 kts - and that was surfing. The hull speed is about 7.3 kts. We occasionally sail at 7 kts, but that's also when it's time to reef. I just installed a feathering prop so hopefully that will help my average speeds. I can also motor at 7 kts but it gulps fuel. I usually motor around 6 kts. Keep me informed with your modifications & projects. Maybe I can help. In the Marshall Islands... for now
Hi Bill - I was just teasing about seeing you "out here" soon. I know it's a heck of alot of work to toss-off the dock lines for an extended trip. We've done it 2 times now, we're working on the 3rd time as you read this & it's still not easy. We are currently in the Marshall Islands. We've been working here for the last 3 years, but the end is in sight - We're leaving in March to head west out Micronesia to Palau, the Philippines & beyond. Absopositutly on the wind vane - gotta have one. Most important piece of equipment on the boat! We use a Cape Horn & it installs & works well on the Reliance 44. If you install a wind vane, one of the things you will need to work-around is your over-hanging mizzen boom. Any wind vane will need to fit either under or behind the boom. I origionally installed ours back when I had a mizzen mast & we designed the horizintal axle to be long enough to extend aft of the boom end & we also designed the tower to be tall enough to get clean air flow over the top of our bimini. All became much simpler when we removed the mizzen. I shortened the horizontal axle to bring the system in closer to the boat. If you decide to go with a Cape Horn I can send you installation photo's. Also take a look at the Hydrovane. Stay Warm Rick

I am a marine mechanic, I was woundering if I would find work travelling around, a few people have said that I would probably find work without too much trouble, We also do canvas work. How long have you had your boat? Do you feel safe in it. I ended up getting a new aries with the boat , in fact it just got here a couple of days ago,(her insurance paid for it) anyway got to go to work, cya for now.Bill

Working your way around the world
Hi Bill - You can make some extra money working on peoples boats. It'll be piece-meal though - one here & one there. So, don't depend on it to pay for everything. Most countries don't allow you to work, so you'll have to do it under the table. My wife & I are both Engineering Project Managers. We stopped at Kwajalein Atoll, which is a U.S. Army base, & took jobs. Got real jobs.. 8-5, American wages, health insurance, paid vacations, the whole shebang. Got free housing, no taxes, etc. etc. It's the sweetest deal a cruiser could ever hope for. There are about 1/2 dozen cruisers working here. We all sponsered each other in & helped them find jobs. Let me know how the Aries installation goes. Send pics. I got an e-mail from Reliance hull #21 yesterday. I told him about this forum. Hope he checks-in. So far it's just ussins.

The Marshalls are nice, but for me it is a toss up between Tonga & Fiji for the best cruising, many, many reasons. Have you heard of the mucho crime, a la piracy in the Philippines? I am stillhearing of it, supposed to be the worst around the area, including the dreaded 'Straits of Malacca'! I knew two divers, we met in Fiji, that had flown to Manila, and were to meet a dive goup over there. They took a cab, the driver took them to an ally where armed men robbed them and let them go again, peniless. + the can have Typhoons at just about any time there, yes, 'out of season' why most cruisers stay out. Auto-helm with a trim tab works well for a self-steering, I took off the black aluminum vane tnad manufactured a piece at the bottom counterweight to accept a small tiller-type auto-pilot that worked for peanuts. The 12 volt tiller-pilot steered the trim tab only just enough that the trim-tab would steer the entire rudder and steer the boat.

Hey Ron , nice to see you ,just woundering where you are now, how about a pic of your boat? for both you and rick , how do I find the hull # , is it the last 2 # s of the serial #? oh by the way Rick , nice setup for the work, did you say it might be ending soon,where do you go from there?
