Hi folks.My Vega (Buffa) has what I believe is called a Volvo style sterngland. I could do with a bit of advice about it. At various times I've had one engineer show me how to lubricate this and another showing me that he pulled the boot back a little to allow some water in when Buffa first went in the water to, apparently, prevent overheating. When I had a closer look at the sterngland myself this year I realised that I couldn't work out how to carry out either actions. Can anyone point me at a website or some photographs/diagrams to remind me what these chaps did? Thanks. Mark

Hi Mark – I have had a Volvo Sterngland for a number of years. You should have a small tube of blue grease which you smear round the interface between the gland and the shaft. I do this once a year. When the boat first goes in the water you are supposed to squeeze the black rubber of the gland so that the seal to the water is slightly broken and you get a drop of water through. That is all there is to it.

The Volvo stern gland works well. I installed one on a Moody and used for many seasons. A smear of grease (from Volvo) is added to the "O" ring. When yacht is put into water at beginning of the season, air can be trapped at the sern gland. This may cause over heating when in use. To remove the air simply use a series of compressions (squeze with your hand) on the sides of the stern gland until all air is expelled and you are pumping water. This should only need doing after each drying out. Because I was on a drying mooring it became one of our pre-sailing checks

Hi MarkAny marine Volvo dealer should be able to supply. I get mine from Volspec Ltd - PartsOff Oyster Business Park, Woodrolfe RoadTollesburyNr. Maldon, Essex CM9 8SEI suspect that there is very little special about the grease other than it not deteriorate the "O" ring. I have a Volvo Penta Rubber Stuffing Box on my Albin Ballad. It needs a little "burp" occasionally. I can't figure how any air gets in as it's below the water line. Other than that it's a great seal ... very simple and effective. Checking some of the cruiser forums I see others also have to burp them sometimes. I found a website that sells the same seal, but with an air tube that lets any air out and a removeable plug to add grease. When mine needs replacement I'll check this one out.My lubrication instructions specify adding 1 cc of Volvo Shaft Lubricating Grease that came with the seal (part # V828250) once a year.Would I put one in again? Hi All,I phoned up Volspec today and ordered some grease. While chatting the chap told me that as a rubber component they would recommend replacing after about seven years. In which case I suspect that mine needs replacing! I was just wondering what your opinions on this are? How long have you had these on your boats?

The stern gland is a dripless seal. IMHO it's a lot better than the PSS shaft seal as it's dead simple, effective, and best of all a lot less expensive. It will also fit in a shorter space. My shaft had a very slight wear groove from the previous stuffing box, but I had it polished out before installing the Volvo seal. It's important to have a perfectly smooth surface for the rubber to seal over.I paid about $70 for mine, including shipping. Before I bought it I searched the net for e-pinions and could only find favorable ones ... from people who actually used them. So far, mine is performing well.Peter
Hi folks,Just to report back on my initial post - when we went to the boat on Tuesday we did as suggested and everything behaved as you said it would, so thank you for your advice. I've ordered some grease from Volspec who told me that really the grease is just standard blue marine grease. they had two Volvo sizes - a small tube for just one application and a larger one for a grease gun but a third size in the middle which is labelled Eventide Johnson which is what I went for.
The guy also sent me a copy of the installation instructions (same as the one Peter gave a google search details for so I can have a look at the diagram and see how it works. The instructions do say that the seal should be changed after every 500 operating hours or every fifth year. So, on that basis, I guess mine needs doing. How long have you folks had your seals fitted?
