Hello all,

so on my beneteau I have a volvo shaft seal. I have to slide the shaft aft about 2 inches or so and was wondering will this in any way damage the volvo shaft seal. It is a wonderful simple shaft seal but i do not have any experience with it other than it hasn’t dripped in 6 years with the only maintenance being a burp and lube every season.

thanks
Greg

Are you sliding the seal up the shaft (over a section of shaft that you can inspect before sliding) or the other way? If it were me I’d try to inspect the shaft first, clean up any corrosion or roughness, give it some extra grease, then slowly slide it while turning the shaft. I am no expert though and I’ve also never done anything with mine other than greasing and burping.

Was considering the same….. sliding shaft out so can inspect. Actually just bought a new o e so will replace it anyway, but thanks for the input. I saw a YouTube on the replacement and they are actually very simple and highly effective seals.

thanks

I think as long as the shaft is smooth and clean where the seal will move on the shaft, you should be good. I would smear a little grease on the shaft there, and re-grease after it is back in position.
