We've recently purchased a 1988 First 285 with a Volvo Penta 2002. The 2 cylinder diesel appears to be in great shape and sounds good when running... however, it appears to shake excessively. So much so, that the vibration travels along the copper fuel line to the diesel tank where the fill hose clamps have vibrated loose. We would appreciate any and all feedback... Thanks

Check the engine mountings

My brand new 361 with a Volvo Penta 2030 was also vibrating a lot. I reported that to the dealer and to Beneteau Warranty for more than 6 months. It turned out one of the Engine mountings was missing a nut!!!. Result, new cutlass bearing, haul out and $$$ wasted. I would also, check the alignment of the engine, in my case, even after the expensive bearing repair, the yard did not properly align the engine and some vibration continued until I personally did it. Finally, they tell me that some vibration at idle that goes away with increased RMP is OK. Of course, that was the story they kept telling me for 6 months. Good luck

Thanks Jose

Thanks Jose, you are probably right; I will check it this weekend. Also, I appreciate knowing about the vibration at idle that goes away with increased RMP... I have also noticed this.

I think is a resonance mode

I am not sure why the vibration at idle is noticeable higher. It is possible that the mass of the prop at the end of a flexible shaft combined with the elasticity of the engine mounts could generate resonant amplification when excited at certain frequencies. In my case, I have changed my prop to a Gori folding prop (heavier and longer than my original fixed 2-blade prop) and I added a drive saver that increased the distance between the prop and the engine. If you watch your engine you will see that at idle it tends to jump around quite a bit on the mountings. One thing I am sure now is that I have nuts on all mountings!!!

Excessive vibration

Facing same problem on my 1990 285. Just bought it, and surveyor said: "renew cutlas bearing, if vibration persists align engine". Haven't solved the problem yet.
