A friend who:

a) is a truck mechanic so knows diesel engines
b) has a Volvo Penta MD6/7 engine in his (non-Vega) boat as I do in my Vega

has mixed about 30% (home heating) kerosene into his diesel tank and is running his engine on the mixture.

The reason: to run the engine at a higher temp and clean out the exhaust/injectors.

(Just one tank-full then back to normal straight diesel.)

I have to admit that there is no visible smoke in his exhaust.

I am wary (despite his undoubted expertise) of damaging my engine by following his example.

Any comments?

Thanks,
IN the wintertime most diesel here in the States comes closer to
being Kerosene than diesel. It starts easy in cold weather and is
said to clean injectors and valves. He may have something there
and it doesn't do any harm. If the guys MD7 is fresh water cooled
it runs hotter with it's 180 deg thermostate. With higher heat it
will likely smoke less and deliver a small amount more horsepower
and be a little more fuel efficient.. Doug

Hi John

I ran my Volvo on Heating oil for 15 years, only
started using diesel these last few years because of legalities!
