Hi All,

Hope your day is rolling along nicely.

I bought an MD2B and am working on it.
This is the Air Filters or Air Cleaners.
Basically they I guess stop bugs from coming in or small things.
It doesn't open and there is just a metal screen.

The previous owner painted stuff to cover the rust.
I removed the paint and can now see the rust.

The item attaches to a magnet.
Sparks but
Not sure what metal.

I can grind it with my dremel and a 8193 to what looks like the original metal.
Any suggestions here ?

Do I clean it to the base metal and then brush some clear Cote rust inhibitor.
Any suggestions ?

Do I clean it and then use rust primer
then use a "primer" for the metal.
then paint it with the Volvo Green or whatever color.

I don't mind doing maintenance 10 years from now.
Just don't want to strip all the rust and have it rust back in a few months.

Thank you

Photos.
Engine is not mine but that is what they look like on the one in my boat and the old photos.
62, 63 and 61 are just after paint removal.
64 is after I worked on it a bit with the dremel, you can see the nice clean metal under it.

OK, here is the deal. You need to buy three products. First get a liquid rust remover that is named "Evapo-Rust". It is made by CRC and should be available in most decent auto stores. Locally I find it at Harbor Freight in quarts and gallons. I would buy a gallon because you need to soak the rusted part. But a quart would work if you soak sections at a time. This stuff is amazing.
After you have the parts de-rusted, you need the second product. It is called "POR-15", and you can get it at auto body supply shops. Get a 1/2 or a 1 pint kit (don't buy a lot because it has a shelf life after opening) that includes the metal cleaner and surface prep solutions. Or you can buy them separately. POR-15 is intended as a protective coating on auto body frames. After using the metal cleaner and surface prep solutions, you paint the parts with the protective coating. I don't remember if it needs one coat or two.
POR-15 is intended to have an over-coat, so buy some Volvo green (at the same store as the POR-15), and give it a couple coats. That is the third product.
IMO, You will never have to touch it again.
I had a nasty raw water pump that was attacked by salt from a leaking seal. Since it was bronze, I wire-brushed it and then I used the POR-15 system. Finally painted it with Volvo green, and after 10+ years it still looks like new.

You can use a rust removal solution; however, it appears that you have eliminated the rust by mechanical means. The traditional methods that I was taught in the Naval Air Service is complete rust removal, one or two coats of zinc chromate primer followed by two top coats of paint. Whatever coatings you use, I would use primer & top coat from same manufacturer to ensure compatibility.
