Well my 2003t has finally given me enough grief to repower. I have made my choice between a Volvo D2-40, Beta Marine 37.5hp and a Yanmar 3JH4E. My choice was the Yanmar based on Dealerships through out the area that I cruise, resale of my Oceanis 390 someday, cost and availability of parts and the yard that I want to use will allow me to do as much of the install that I want and will assist when I need it. They will also let me use their engine jig to install the mounts and set the distance to the prop shaft. The Yanmar was $1700.00 less than the Beta marine. The only thing the other engines had over the Yanmar were 4 cylinders compared to 3 cylinder for the Yanmar. The one problem was the Yanmar is a counter rotating transmission compared to the Volvo with clock wise. Then in talking to Autoprop they want $2500 to change the 3 blades, you have got to be kidding. I will now go to a fixed prop and sell my Autoprop and many new parts for the 2003t to include rebuilt turbo with no hours new fuel pump, new engine mounts ect. My Volvo has blowby that is causing some oil leak problem. The engine starts and runs fine but I do not want to bother with it anymore. I will let you know how the repower goes.

fixed blade prop

Be careful with a fixed prop. I have an Oceanis 390, bought in 2005. The original owner described the difficulty with prop walk with a fixed blade screw. He could do nothing to prevent the boat from walking to STBD when backing up which made setting anchors embarrassing. He said at times he would end up 90 deg from his starting point. The boat now has a max prop which improved the situation. When I back up I turn the wheel to the stop to port. With power on I can back straight out of my slip. Once I have enough boat speed I put it in neutral and let the rudder do it's job to swing the bow to STBD.

Fixed Blade Prop Walk

Hi Got a New Beneteau 323 . Single prop and Twin Rudders so we have to be moving to go anywhere . Its certainly been good fun .. The only solution we have found to the prop walk is to be very gentle with the revs . Just ease the revs on and start moving . We only get prop walk if we use to many revs . Bit scary to start as you think the boat will not go where you want it to but slow does work .. Happy Sailing
