Volcano Valve

I have a 73 Catalina 22 that has a volcano valve that has a very slight leak. I just bought it and the previous owner told me about this. I have read in my Catalina Direct manual that this is common and easy to fix with the new plastic valve. I don't understand about replacing it fixing the leak. If the nipple that is glassed into the hull is the actual sorce of the leak, then how will a plastic valve on the top of the volcano "nipple" fix this? Or does this plastic valve actually fit through the hull? Does anyone have any experience replacing this? Thanks for the help! Steve

Glass it in

Steve: If your valve is still good you can bond the pipe in the volcano with marine epoxy and that should stop the leak. Barry Broyles C22 # 1909 "Brighteyes"

Just replaced valve...

Steve, I recently changed out my valves and piping with a combo of brass and plastic bought at Ace Hardware. The valve actually screws into a threaded piece which had been glassed into the hull to create the "Volcano". I was able to unscrew the old parts and rescrew on the new with bonding tape without harming the existing thru-hull fitting. The Catalina direct info is for what I did (I believe). As the previous response indicates, for your leak, you will need to reglass the fitting that becomes part of the hull or volcano. Depending on your hardware's current condition you may not need to change anything else out. Although, my new ball value with easy to use handle is a much improved component. As all discussions about the "volcano" seem to indicate. This work should be done while on land. In the event of a mishap, it might be tough to scramble up out of the cabin while the water fills the hull... ;-) Best of luck, Vania O'Connor
