Void under the head

Does anyone know what's in that void under the fiberglass pedestal on which the toilet mounts? Seems like the hull slopes down underneath. Is it sealed or does it drain into the bilge?

On the 34, ( I believe your 31 is the same) the inboard edge (bottom) is sealed to the hull shell so to get to the bilge, the liquid would have to run aft down the inside of the beam then turn toward the bilge when it intersects with the big transverse beam at the forward end of the keel. That beam has limber holes on its aft side to allow any liquid in there to drain to the bilge.

I have to ask WHAT it is that you're asking whether it drains into the bilge. Nothing should.

The head was held down by lag bolts into the fiberglass. The Raritan has a different mounting pattern than the Jabsco it replaced. I filled the old holes, but I just wanted to know what was under there and what might happen if water got into that space.

It is only sealed as good as the liner is glued to the hull.It is just hollow empty liner space.I doubt it is sealed 100%.Because there is stringer to the right of the head.

That's extremely useful, Spraygun. Thank you. I assume the area beneath and behind the head is pretty much the same. I will try make the head area as watertight as possible with respect to the bulkhead, which it was not before. The holes for the hoses to/from the holding tank were not sealed so I'm assuming showering would have gotten some water into that bulkhead area. I'm just not sure whether it drained back into the shower bilge. Again, thanks.

The area where the hoses pass through the stringer, needs to be sealed, if you use that shower.Otherwise it drains all throughout the hull liner.It eventually makes it's wake to the main bilge.The water will possibly stink over time.

There should be limber holes in those members that allow water to drain to an area of the bilge that's accessible to clean. Without 'em, water becomes trapped in the grid, sits and "ferments" and STINKS!

I am talking about the hoses on the back side of this bulkhead. Where they pass through on the other side.Shower water needs to be sealed out.


The liners have the holes drilled throughout the boat already.

Good...'cuz it didn't look like there were any in the earlier photo...and Hunter has been known to forget to put 'em in occasionally.

Btw...every one of the hose connections in this last photo should have TWO clamps, not just one...with the screws 180 degrees apart.
