FYI - I was searching for the source of a leak around the companionway on my 1984 C-30. I removed the wood step and found a large void in the fiberglass below the step. Water was seeping around the edges of the wood step and finding its way into this void and then reappearing at several places below the companionway. Thought this might be of help if anyone is struggling with leaks in that area.

The hatch boards don't do a very good job of keeping the water out. The way that finally worked for me was to install a sunbrella hatch cover. Make sure the snaps are located about one inch over the top and over the wood on the sides. Stopped all of the leaking and is useful with the hatch boards removed. Keeps the sun out.
