I have a 32 vision in need of a new main and jib/genoa. Has anyone had a main w/ a larger roach (no backstay) installed? Also what size head sail to get?
I have thought about a 140% w/ foam luff? I sail in San Francisco bay and often get 25kts in summer afternoons, but light 5-10 in winter.
Thanks

That's exactly what the buyer of my V32 did He had a big roach main and a larger jib. I think he went with a mylar tape drive for weight and shape holding. He also had an Assm. spinnaker made. He also installed a folding prop. He raced the boat.

Rum: I would use a sail loft in the bay area. I think the folks that make the sails for this website have an office there. It is a matter if you want that extra area on the main, will you need to reef sooner?

Maybe not if you get the sail designed properly.

As far as the jib goes, you may want to think about a self tending jib.

If you install a solid boom vang (Garhauer Marine Rigid Boom Vang RV 20-1SL is what I installed on a Hunter 31) then you will not need a topping lift and that will allow you to install a larger roach main.

UK Halsey (located in Grand Marina), Pineapple, Doyle, Lee Sails and other lofts are located in Alameda. UK designs it locally and has it sewn in Chicago. Doyle and Pineapple sew it in Alameda. Consider Hunterowners (uses Doyle loft out of Florida I understand) and North (north has a SF loft). There are also many other sail lofts in the SF bay. All recommended to increase sail weight 1 ounce higher than Challenger's recommendation for SF summer winds. I purchased an 8.3 ounce, Challenge high modulus dacron with 2 + 2 battens, maximum roach, 2 reefs, Cunningham, and loose foot on my Hunter 31 last December.

As far as the jib the local sail makers recommended 110% for summer and 150% for winter. I also purchased a 110% head sail at the time since I already had a 150%. It is also a 8.3 oz, Challenge high modulus dacron with UV protector, luff flattener and designed to maximize sail area close to the deck as the sail supplier could design for given the head sail is mounted to a furler. The turnaround time was 3 weeks.

The new sails were tested during several very high wind days in January in the bay and out the gate and I am very pleased with their performance.

Suggest checking the web site for Challenger and other sail cloth manufactures sail cloth, sail lofts above and talking to the local Alameda sail lofts. Inquire about how to maximize the sail size, what material and weight, sail design features and full or partial battens that meets your needs and price. If you are confident about taking the measurements yourself then purchasing sails from Hunterowners and other lofts outside the area is an option. Plan on a new main sail cover since the new sails will be larger. Winter prices will be lower and turnaround time will be faster than summer.

SP: There is no topping lift on a Vision. They came from the factory with a rigid vang. When you are not sailing the main halyard is supposed to be attached to the end of the boom for motoring.

These boats can have huge main sails, but it is a matter of balance and how much sail you want to deal with when the winds pipe up to 25-40 in the bay.

The Vision 32 is a slightly different boat than our Vision 36, but they both have the same principal (large main & small jib). I really would go with a smaller jib and make it self tending/roller furling. When sailing downwind there is very little reason to even deploying the jib, the main is like a spinnaker.

We have been out in 30-35 kts of wind with a full main. Yes it was a handful, but she did sail without a reef (wow).

Hi -

I'm a newbe here but I have a 1994 Vision 32 and the prior owner put full battened Fx sails on the boat prior to me getting it. I'm also out of Alameda and it seems to handle the summer winds just fine. If you want contact me directly and we can talk further.
