Vinyl GoldLeaf Lettering

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has ordered vinyl goldleaf letters for the name of their boat. I can't really spend the money on real goldleaf lettering, but was told the vinyl letters are very close to the real thing, and are easy to apply and remove.

I would greatly appreciate if anyone has a pic of their boat with the vinyl goldleaf letters, all the "previews" online look so cheesy, I am hoping the real thing looks better in real life.

Here is a pix of my graphics

It is not a great picture of the graphics but it is the best I have.

I applied these graphics myself and they were a 3-layer job. The gold edge trim on the letters was the second layer. The drop shadow was the first.

I think they look pretty good. They have been on for 11 years, 7 years when this picture was taken.

Rick, where did you order your letters from? I haven't been able to find vinyl goldleaf WITH a border around the letters - everything I've seen is plain goldleaf....

Igor,

I see your home port is Baltimore, go to any Baltimore City Fire Station and check out the lettering on their Engines or Trucks. The lettering is all vinyl, with the numbers and letters in vinyl gold leaf with a black outline and double drop shadow in light and dark blue, and all of the striping is also vinyl. It realy looks sharp! From a few feet away it looks like real gold leaf.

The border is actually a separate layer so it's sort of a gold letter applied over a slightly bigger silver one. Watching the installer, it didn't appear too tricky, just painstaking.

You could do it.

Patrick (the installer) said the gold leaf was manufactured in Germany. It was a little pricey but not too bad.

The brand of gold leaf vinyl you want to ask for is called SignGold. It's actual 22 kt gold sandwiched between a clear and an adhesive layer. Here's their website... http://www.signgold.com/. Check out the gallery under boats to get an idea of what to expect. I owned a sign shop for years and used this product quite a bit and really liked the results. Be sure to seal the edges around the gold layer with the sealer pen they can provide (read the FAQ's). There are a few different patterns in the gold leaf, The one I liked best was called "Florentine Swirl" (see photos).
Here are a couple of jobs I did with this product. The bottom photo was the hatch board for my first boat (Cal 20) "Tiller I'll be late" was her name.

Google boat graphics. Many companies. I have had "gold Leaf" for 10 years and it still looks good. My source is since out of business but the name came on a large sheet with shadow already under the gold leaf and went on easily in one piece, pre-spaced etc..

There are three types of gold do-it-yourself vinyl graphics. The gold METALLIC is the most common and has a nice glow when the sun hits it just like metallic paint on a car. IMITATION gold leaf is a shiny gold color "foil" with a "hammerleaf" pattern. This is the best bang for the buck. Then there is the 22k SignGold. It has the shine of the imitation gold and the glow if the gold metallic. It is pretty fancy and considerably more expensive.
