I have a C. Cushions Inc. helmsman seat cushion. It was getting somewhat grungy and I wanted to bring back the like-new appearance. The only problem was that I wasn't sure what my best cleaning bet might be.

Cue the vendor website...right there in the Q&A was their recommended 'secret formula' - 1 part vinegar, 3 parts bleach.

After fifteen minutes of wetting down, scrubbing lightly, and rinsing, I think it looks great!

I asked the very same question last year. Steve's right. Full strength works great.

Careful with bleach. It can attack the threads in some marine upholstery. If you do use it rinse very well.

Steve/Stu, of course there are other options.

That said, I wanted to see what the vendor recommended and I happened to have the bleach and vingear on hand. I can't say the same for the SG, nor do I suspect the SG can be had for the $5 total it originally cost for the gallon of bleach and portion of vinegar.

I guess the points are that A) the vendor offered something that was easily referenced and B) it didn't cost me an arm and a leg to get it and C) it worked just fine.

It's nice to know there are options!

drumbeater, there are no threads in the vinyl covered cushion I'm talking about. You would want to avoid using bleach at full strength on any fabrics, marine or otherwise.

Bottom Siders does recommend Simple Green. It is a good product to have on the boat for other cleaning jobs too. Environmentally friendly (in case anyone cares).

Ace Hardware shows a gallon of SG at $55. I've had a gallon on my boat for two years! Compared to WM Boat Soap or many other cleaners, it's a pretty good deal. You could also buy TSP crystals and mix with water. If $55 over two years is too pricey for you, how come you can afford a boat? :):):)

All hail simple green! lol, like a pack of dogs on a wounded elk with this tangential discussion, eh?

In not quite as much seriousness, at 10x the cost, that attitude is great in a vaccuum, not so great in the big picture. I also don't store gallons of anything (ok, there could be an exception or two, but I'm I've not been able to raise the precipitate) on my boat other than water.


Here's the greater story...all cushions at home, sitting with a beer and happen to glance over at the pile. Hmm, that cushion's looking homely, wonder what to clean it with. Fire up droid phone and surf to vendor site, find recommendation right there. Mosey on over to the laundry cabinet and find that required ingredients are right there. Didn't consider that I could run out and buy some other product at 10x cost to make sure I kept onside with forum pack. Try out the recommendation, works great.

In that context, your straw men are arguments looking for a victim... :p

Glad it works for you. Very cost effective. Always appreciate when someone asks a question and disagrees with the answers, but, heck, that's life.

PS - I just don't like to keep bleach on the boat and all my cushions and my cleaning materials are on the boat. Only thing I have in my garage are my second jib and the dinghy. :)

Enjoy, it really is great when you're finished and they're lookin' like new.

This reminds me of the smackdown I got for suggesting Catalina Direct in direct violation of the must contact Catalina factory first policy.

Wow, that's horrible!

Thanks for the heads-up, I won't be going that route again.

Mebbe next time I'll give the SG a try.

More like overkill. This is the absolute nuclear mold option. As in kill Anthrax. And the mix sounds too hot. Dilute a strong bleach mix in a gallon of water and add a cup of household white vinegar. Do this outside or in Level C PPE, full face protection with organic vapor (carbon) carts. Actually, belay that, you surely don't have the training, as indicated by your taste in rum. :)


Start with Z Cleaner or something off the shelf.

Man, I can't WAIT to mix some of this stuff. Where else, but on a sailing website can you learn how to make such an awesome weapon! Chemical warfare baby.

I'm gonna check out a power boat website, (if I can stomach it).
I'll bet they are making onboard nuclear warheads..
