There are several ways to remove a vinyl stripe. One way as mentionsed is to use a heat gun to warm the surface that softens the adhesive and allows you to pull off the film. This works if the film stripe is not too old. On older stripes the adhesive has in most cases harden and no amount of heat will soften the adhesive. In this case the only and best way is to mask off the area and use a commercial paint stripper. Allow the strippper to eat into the film and adhesive and then scrape off with a plastic squegee. Some adhesive residue will in most cases remain when using either method. This can be taken care of by using 3M's adhesive remover which does a reasonably good job of getting adhesive residue off. Then clean the surface and apply a very high quality vinyl tape such as 3M's 180 series of striping films. Make sure that the ambient temperature and surface are at least above 60 degress F.

Scraper

Go to Home Depot or Lowe's and get a 4" wide sharp edged wall paper scraper; start at one end at about a 30 degree angle, watch that you don't dig in at the corners and pull up on the vinyl as you scrape. I found using a heat gun was more trouble than dry scraping; clean off any residue with 'Goof Off'.

no no no i think

go to the auto paint shop supply store, buy a rubber stripe removing wheel get two if you got a lot of stripes. It is a rubber wheel you put in an electric dril. with a careful touch you can strip it off pretty quick, no chemicals, no and not damage to the boat. i have seen a couple of people use the heat gun and actually burn the gell coat before the stuff softens.

Use the rubber wheel

I just removed the stripes (double stripe and Hunter 410) from a Hunter 410 using the rubber wheel and drill. It only took about 3 hours. You just need to be careful using too much speed and don't stay in one spot too long. The rubber wheel only costs about $12.00 at NAPA.

Eraser is good for some stripes, but the steamer....

I was a real believer in the eraser until I tried using it on thick vinyl. The eraser is great for thin brittle vinyl. When I tried the eraser on the stripes just below the toe rail, it was a very tedious job. The fellow that does our lettering used a small wall paper steamer to remove the stripes on my 1994 Hunter Vision 36 and they peeled off in a matter of minutes. He indicated that he purchase the unit from Home Depot for about $40. It is worth trying.

It Seems To Me...

...that the rubber wheel will heat up the vinyl and then strip it off when the vinyl reaches a "warmer" temp than it can stand? Correct?

I think that is the theory behind the eraser!

Paul: I think that this is the theory behind the eraser. When I did my stripes on the coach cabin, they were in very sad shape. It only took about 45 min. to do the entire job. When I tried it with the same device on the hull, just below the toe rail, it took several hours. This vinyl was damaged in a few spots but was still very pliable. The steamer also heats the vinyl and glue. It almost falls off once the steamer is up to temp.

Steve, Looks nice...

...they (the boats) always look nice when they are naked. I took the cabin stripes, and black mask, off my boat and have left it that way.
