My son, knowing my interests, sent me the following link that he found. It is a great video taken from a kite flown from on board a boat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKGupz_9mGc My son does KAP Kite Aerial Photography which allows aerial shots most anywhere. I have attached one of those that he made of my boat at anchor.

Cool! Question.

In the video, we see a guy on shore launching the kite. Is the kite luanched from shore or from the boat? Nice job! Very clever idea.

Absolutely the coolest gadget ever

The youtube video of this guy singlehanding his(very nice) boat in the open ocean while flying the spinnaker and casually filming his day while also lauching/flying/retrieving a kite with a video cam too. How cool was that and what a great perspective from his camera*!. A quick google search found this cheap vid cam and how-to instructions for the ambitious. http://www.flysim.com/kitesim/kitesim_kitecam.html This is so interesting for guys intrigued by all wind driven gadgets. I can see it now, aerial vid shots of the boat, the neighbor, chasing the cat/dog....the sky's the limit(but I'll stop). And to top it off, malcoms kid is PAID(or could be) to go fly a kite. Now how far off is my next birthday...hmmm:). Michael

Amazing! :)

Now we need to see what the cam looks like...it's definitely going on my list of essential toys needed! Sweet and simple. Thanks for sharing. :) -Sean

Super!

This is great photography! I have sent the URL to a couple ,dare I say, non-Hunter sailing buddies. In one sequence, I am glad to see that the skipper is wearing a harness. Although he is alone, it's a good idea while he is running around he boat doing this type of photography..

Chuck - the piper

Chuck I can tell you have been here in the summer months. For others a Scottish pipe band marches and plays Saturday evenings. These days the pipers would be up to their sporan in snow in the -20C weather we are getting. Not good weather for a kilt.

Information on KAP for those interested

My son replied with some information. Regarding the specific video from You Tube that I posted - there is a discussion on it at: http://arch.ced.berkeley.edu/kap2/php/wind/discuss/comments.php?DiscussionID=653&page=1#Item_0 Regarding equipment that he is using and recommend I will simply post the reply that he provided to someone that saw some of his pictures on KAP forum on Flickr. "Thanks. I just started with the hobby this past July and have really enjoyed it. I use a Canon PowerShot A520. Shutter priority is a must and a configurable timer can be handy - basically the more manual options the better off you'll be. One thing I wish I had is an electronic shutter control port. I may invest in a slightly better point and shoot (a few more megapixels would be nice). As far as weight - I haven't put my SLR up and probably won't for the time being. Some KAPers do though. I picked up my rig and kite as a kit from Brooks Leffler at http://www.brooxes.com/ and a Futaba RC radio and servos from a local hobby shop. The servos pan and tilt the rig as well as depress the shutter. Many people will also build their own (rigs and kites). I have two kites - a FlowForm 16 and a Rokkaku. These two kites are popular with KAPers though quite a number fly large Deltas and use Doperos in lower wind conditions. There are quite a few resources on the net and several variations of the hobby. Here some good places to start: http://arch.ced.berkeley.edu/kap/ http://www.kiteaerialphotography.net/ http://scotthaefner.com/kap/ And also on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/groups/kiteaerialphotography/ "
